I am so confused on what I need. I am on the current diploma programe adult nursing. Nursing in the UK generic. Not mixed skill. Can anyone please give me more information, is the diploma accepted and what experience will I need.

Many thanks and if i have forgotten anything please give any advice.

Moved to the International forum as per the red banner.

A lot will depend on the province you want to work in and what your completed transcripts state. For Canada you need both theory and practical hours in Paeds, mental health, Obstetrics and adult. There is a sticky in the Canadian forum that lists the college of registered nurses for all provinces and if you go there and look up the province you want to live and work it will indicate what is required as a international Educated Nurse (IEN). Once you get eligibility you will be required to sit and pass CRNE but I would say whilst still in school try and get theory and clinical in the areas you need. Your school may be able to give you an idea on what your transcripts will show giving you an idea on what to do

Hi,
Glad to have found this site! I am a 2nd year student nurse, I am planning to move or at least work for a few years in Calgary Canada, I have friends over there I have visited many times Canada is an amazing place and I am so exctied to maybe have a chance to experiance canadian life!
I am also on the dipHe programme and have been told that this is adequate to get in but was not told about the entrance exam, is this something all nurses have to pass to work in canada?
I have the opportunity with my uni to do my last month's placement over in Canada so hopefully this will give me more of an understanding of nursing out in Canada.
Any more advise on the exam or entrance to Canada would be very appreciated.

Many Thanks

Every nurse in Canada is required to pass the national exams.

Alberta Health Services has a hiring freeze for the forseeable future. Check the Cdn. threads.

Several provinces have cut back on hiring Canadian applicants for positions and the big international recruitment drives are over.

Do you know what provinces are still hiring, although I would still have about another 2 years left of training, then would want another 1-2 years experiance over here. Hopefully there maybe a chance then, I know when I came over last summer Canada was deperate for nurses (as was everywhere!) I guess they just have all they need now, from the look of the canadian threads there are no jobs going.
Thanks for the info though.

We don't even know if we'll have jobs next month, ever mind two years from now. Many nurses are working out their seniority dates and trying to figure out where they could bump into jobs. The psychiatric hospital locally is supposed to be closing and going to a "care in the community" model. Where to all the Psych nurses go?

While not identical to the NHS, Cdn. healthcare is government (federally & provincially) funded. There is a shortage of nurses BUT there is a shortage of money as well. No money results in no new hires.

We have new grads in my city that can't find a job for love or money. This province had a huge recruiting drive in the far east about two years ago. Those work permits should not be renewed. Nurses are migrating to the US or back to their home provinces because many moved here when their spouses job moved them.

things may and will probably have changed in a couple of years, I would suggest waiting until you have completed your training and gain some experience then see what is happening with the provinces and jobs
