UK Nursing Salaries

I really don't want to offend anyone here, but don't you feel angry at the low nursing pay in the UK? Here in the US, nurses make really good money. REALLY good money compared to most jobs. Why is it that the pay is so low in the UK?

The difference in salaries doesn't seem so bad when you look at it that way but the cost of living in the UK is much higher than in the southeast USA. You are looking at spending about £160,000 pounds or around 270,000 dollars for an extremely small 2-3 bedroom 1 bathroom townhouse in the more reasonable parts of the UK.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.
I have been quoted around 22,000 - 26,000 GBP for E grade nurses in the UK which is about $41,000 - 55,000. This seems reasonable to me. If anyone disagrees or finds these quotes inaccurate please let me know.

Also, has anyone tried to access an application on the web site of the Irish board of nursing. There are detailed instructions on filling out the application but I cannot, for the life of me, find the link to download the application :uhoh3: . I e-mailed them but haven't heard anything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I wish it was $22,000 - 26,000 for E grade nurse in the UK. I used to be one. You may get that much if you take into account pay for working unsociable hours but with the new agenda for change coming in pay is changing and I believe that unsocial hours are being done away with and your wage will have it already included. . Grades are being phased out and it is now graded from 1 upwards. Nurse are generally in grade 5. Have just had a quick look on the department of health website which gives a list of pay scales for 2004 lists E grade as starting at £18,230 and working upwards in incremements to £22,015 over 6 years. There is usually a bit more paid if you are working in London but it isn't much. the link is http://www.dh.gov.uk/assetRoot/04/07/51/12/04075112.pdf

I would also say that the UK has very high cost of living especially if living in and around London

Just had a quick look on the Irish nursing board website and cannot find where to download but there is a link to email someone in registration might be worth giving them a email.

Cost of living is very different in different areas of the US too. I make a high hourly wage, but the 3 bedroom one bath one story house down the street just sold for $900 000 when the asking price was only $800 000.... I have no plans of settling here forever!

I have been doing research on working in the UK and found the salaries to be comparative to the southeast US, where I work. I realize that in the southeast nurses are paid less than elsewhere in the states. I worked in the northeast US as a travel nurse and was paid less than the regular staff nurses! I have been quoted around 22,000 - 26,000 GBP for E grade nurses in the UK which is about $41,000 - 55,000. This seems reasonable to me. Checked the Irish BON website you are probably better calling them if no one emailed you back. There seems to be no forms to download.

I think London has some of the better salaries but thats probably coz your pay includes the London weighting Coz the cost of living is higher in London especially in terms of rent, travel costs. As for food costs I find most supermarkets are the same but if you reside in the city (aound Zone 1 & 2) its pricey. So in the end you won't see the salary stretching.

In London the average price for a 1bed flat is around 160 000pounds to buy.So a 2 bed is around 250 000 pounds in the cheaper areas. Its cheaper outside London your pound can stretch , but there the salaries are at the moment less outside than in London. A weekly travelcard is 30.40 pounds for Zones 1 to 4 in London. So if you travel thru Zone 1 to work your travel is expensive. But London is fun , its multi-cultural, has its own share of crime and loads of things to do, but if you have kids the schools are crap unless you opt for church schools but the majority of schools that are good and free are Catholic Schools and are in demand coz there is some discipline there, the other church schools are fee paying and of course ther are the other privete schools that are expensive. The free schools in London are not all the best I'm afraid if you have kids and value their education.

Let me stop here. You can check the Nursing Times.com website for jobs and salary ideas. All the best.

By the way were you quoting the British pound or the Irish pound? Just curious.

Yes, but the cost of living in the southeast US isn't as high as in the UK and I think at the beginning of this thread they were comparing wages in the south eastern US with the UK. Correct me if Im wrong but I thought real estate in dixie was pretty reasonable?
