Too many nurses in the RP

Thank you for sharing this article, greenjungle. It's an intelligent and well written piece about the current situation of the nursing profession in the Philippines. It's also another excellent argument against the adding of another year to nursing education. It's just another attempt at a quick fix, nothing more.

I can relate very well to this article. It accurately describes the situation of Pinoy nurses now. Thanks for posting.

Anyway, sometimes I'm thinking that we are all suffering because of greed. There's the greed of those owners of unqualified schools; greed of people taking up nursing just because of money (so sad); greed of people from the government (like CHED, who's supposed to be regulating nursing schools in the Phils.); etc... In fact, I was once a direct victim of this greed(of review centers and a former member of BON) coz I'm one of the june 06 passers. It makes me sad but tis also a wake up call for me. I realized that I also became greedy: wanting to leave the Phils as soon as possible and always thinking of the dollars I'll be earning. I forgot the real reason why I took up nursing in the first place. I took up nursing because I want to take care of the sick, a very honorable work. Now, I'm still here in the Phils and unemployed. However, my priorities now have changed and what I really want to happen to my career is clearer now. It did me good to finally remember my reason for taking up nursing.

You see, some people only looks at the surface of things. There's a reason why they're doing that. Except for greed of course! We can't always take that away. But then again, if we try to go further, we can see that there are still advantages for proposing this. Partly it can help solve the problem and who knows it might help in molding our future nurses. But to those who are struggling and not on a well to do family, this is a torture and adding to the problem.

The problem with us Filipinos is that we refuse to look at two directions. We only see what we want to see. And that always leads to confusion and chaos.

we all know that very few of the hundreds of thousands of students flooding the nursing schools are really there because they want to care. it's unbelievable that countless pinoy students who would rather be in other courses suddenly developed compassion and caring just now in their hundreds of thousands. where were these students when there was no nursing demand? there you have it, the basic drive that fuels and propels the nursing craze. and a lot of peripheral industries are getting rich over this greed to immigrate to the usa like you said the review centers. can you imagine the revenue that prc gets out of the 80,000 plus graduates who take the nle twice each year? it's staggering money pouring into government coffers. so it's in a lot of people's interest to fan the nursing bandwagon even if there are now too many jobless nurses in the philippines and no visas available for the usa for the thousands waiting in line by consular processing. people should wake up to this reality and put their children in the courses that will get them jobs right in the pi. and there are a lot of call centers for our nurses if they want to survive.

in other countries, people go to nursing school because they actually want to be a nurse!

I understand you need to want to nurse, it is rewarding. How about volunteering your time? Not the slave volunteer program that your country has.

Two thumbs up for this thread. A few number of reasons why these students take up nursing:

1) Parents said so: for these parents think that this course is the ticket abroad.

2) For some, they wanted to migrate and thought of the same thing as in #1

3) They thought that nursing career can make them millionaires

4) Nothing, they really cannot choose what course they want.

hahaha i would so watch this on imbestigador or where ever and most definitely will let my mother watch because i have reached to the point where her constantly saying i should go to the US etc is annoying already. like last sunday atty. garfunkel (not sure of the spelling) said that by october more than a thousand visas will be released, i dont know how spot on that attorney is but he is regarded as being the top lawyers in immigration apparantley my parent/s will believe anything on tv......so maybe if she saw the reality or was told of it then maybe she'd shut up about it :madface: ughhhh sometimes i wish i just took compE .. god i hate the media.. theyre the ones who put up so much hype about nursing/nurses. i remember them doing the same thing with computer courses a long time ago,, :uhoh3: :down: :down: :down:
