Required Hours for various BON

by ukrmn

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has any information about hours requested by the various Nursing boards. Might be a good idea to have a thread with such information. Particularly interested in response about the experience from those who have already passed through this atage of the process.
Thanks

Most that have been approved do not know the exact hours that are needed. And you still need to ultimately get approved by ICHP for the Visa Screen Certificate. It also comes down to how your school breaks down your hours for clinical and theory.

If you have had actual hours in the required subjects, then usually there is no issue. And that is both clinical and theory.

Thanks suzanne,
Unfortunately I did not do any clinical maternity in my hospital training. Are you (or anyone) aware of the CA boards requirements for make up clinical hours. ie can i work supernumery at a maternity hospital or do i have to do the clincial with an educator?
i am desperate, i am still waiting to hear from the board re my application and my husband co. sees us heading over in about 5 weeks!
much appreciated

I suggest to all who are not sure about their hours to go ahead and apply for the CGFNS CES. There are many nurses on the UK forum who thought they wouldn't have enough hours but actually found out that they were fine.

It seems quite hard to find out exactly what the various BON's want but most of us in the UK who trained before the new degree course have been fine and plenty of those who trained after have also been okay. Interestingly many RMN's who did the original 12-18 month core foundation before specialising have also found they are okay.

So really the only thing you can do is go ahead and find out, at least you'll know exactly where you stand.

Some other key pointers - check that the State you want doesn't require the CGFNS exam (different to the VisaScreen which you all need for immigration purposes) - if it does then think really hard about how badly you want to go there because that can add a lot more money & "pain" factor to the process.

Most people have found that Vermont or New Mexico are easier to go through and they issue your license without a SS# (but you will need your SS# before you work of course). You will need to endorse to the State of your choice before you work too so factor that in to the monetary/wait equation. With retrogression you may find it's just as simple to apply to the exact State you want from the word go.

However, having said that California does seem to be a real nuisance to those that apply, both in waiting for the ATT & in taking ages to get the N-CLEX result (from what I've seen posted on the forum) so those thinking of going there may just want to file through another State.

Of course I'm not even going to pretend to be an expert on this it is, however, all info that I have gleaned through my own experience & from some of the very informative posts on "Allnurses". I really hope it helps.

Thanks RGN1. I have read many of your posts and you do seem to know a lot about the process.
I am trying to get to Atlanta GA, all my family are there so that's my motivatation. I applied to the CGFNS for the Certification programme in December 06' , I recently wrote to them asking to change it to the CES, as that is what GA BON requires. I am so anxious to find out whether or not I meet the requirements. Fortunately I covered all the core areas in my trining so just keeing my fingers crossed.

The hours must be in an approved school of nursing. Working in a facility or volunteering will not be accepted. It must show up on a transcript.

You can go thru the theory and clinical at a community college, it is possible to do as a guest student in CA. But CA, as well as any other state BON, and Visa Screen requirements as well. It must be thru an approved school. And the other requirement is that both theory and clinicals are done at the same time.

Where in CA will you be?

Once you apply for a program with CGFNS, they normally do not permit it to be cancelled and the money applied to another program. You do not have to take the exam, but you will need to pay for the CES program.

Only time that is waived is if they made an error on their end, and that is per their website.

I contacted CGFNS via phone and asked for the service to be changed (not cancelled), to the CES programme. They agreed and asked me to submit my request in writing, which I have done.
