Race, Ethnicity on Job Application form? Behind the times? Discrimination? or Other?

Im a Canadian RN
New to The USA Nursing Job Market.
One thing that really caught my attention, was on all the application forms.

Most Hospitals will have a generous section pertaining to your Ethnicity or Race.

I can remember in Canada when questions like these stopped appearing on applications, as it had no purpose - other than the possibility to discriminate.

Can anyone shed some light as to why the US (One of the supposedly world leaders) is still engaged in this practice?

Is there some logic to it?

Is it a Pro or Con to place a check in the box (if provided): "Rather not answer"

Anyone from other countries care to comment on similar trends in their country?

Depending on where the facility is located, they can get funding for making sure that they have a variety of different cultures on staff. It does not discriminate against one getting hired, can actually make it easier for you.

But right now with the retrogression, things are going to be tough all over.

True True: (re: the diversity mix)

Retrogression?
Are you refering to the freeze on Employer sponsored Green Cards? (HB1? Visas?)

Retrogression should'nt affect TN Visas Should it?

Retrogression does not affect TN visa only GC which is what most nurses are applying for. But you only qualify for TN if a Canadian/Mexican citizen

I know this thread is old but couldn't help responding.....yes racism is alive and well. I just encountered the worst case of vivid racism ever....for the first time in my life....I cannot begin to tell how it hurts. And yes it occurred in the hospital and NYP......everyone keep telling me what a prejudice hospital it is and when you look at the ratio of nurses for blacks and white...especially in those very demanding fields, it is noted very clear.....I just wanted to be different and not listen to people and their excuses.....well it slammed in my face unexpectedly!

I know they use those forms for statistics. Also, you don't have to answer any of those questions and just leave it blank. I've done it before, but I really don't mind answering it anyway. I've never seen it to be used for discrimination purposes as all they would have to do is to read your name on the application and also ask you for an interview and do the whole racist thing from there.
