previous work experience as a RN does it count in the US?

by napoca

I am a new RN here in the US...and I need your advice. Some hospitals do offer positions here in Ca ,but don't bridge the previous work time .So you'll start like a new graduate.
Should I take a position if the hospital does not count my experience from the old country ? I used to work there 12 years in med-surg & cardiology and want to work in the same department here in the US.
I understand this isue is important for the salary,etc...
Thanks for advice
Moni

Things are going to be done quite differently here vs what you did in your country. None of them will give you credit for all of the time that you spent overseas working, especially in the beginning, until you can prove yourself.

If you find a facility that you like, I suggest that you start with them.

Thanks Suzanne for the suggestion. I was thinking about. I hope they will offer me an interview and thanI'll accept the job. We have to be flexibile!
I will see it tomorrow when I'll call them.

I got credit for all my nursing experience in Canada. One hospital said they would only count it as half of what it would have been in the US. Needless to say I didn't accept that job!

Experience in Canada is usually accpeted at face value, since the work is so similar to ours. But from other countries, it usually is not. At least until the nurse can prove themself, then they move up the ladder much quicker than the others.

nice to hearing of you "cineva"! Yes I am from Romania too! Fortunately they
counted my work experience, and I am happy for this. I think it's depend on the hospital... I have graduated in Germany, and have worked there for 15 years.... but.. i met somebody from Romania and they counted her experience too..... so I am sure it's different from hospital to hospital. Where do you live in the US ? If you want... send me an PM. Anyway thanks for answering my question!!

Usually from Europe, they will start you off at two years of your work for every year of credit in terms of starting base pay. But I have never seen more than that.
