Re: Possible mark-ups for three impt. immigration bills scheduled today
Little update on what happened from the 2nd hand information I have gathered.
Final sub-committee voting was postponed for HR 5882 and HR 5924 tomorrow due to lacking reporting quorum.
The mark-up hearing went on very, very late through the night since one Representative tried to 'filibuster' HR 5882 by offering one amendment after another (at least 10 were offered), even though he knows it will not be accepted by his colleagues and always voted not to be included.
In a nutshell, no amendments were included in HR 5882 at the end even though one Representative tried to delay it by offering one amendment after another and there was a voting of 6 yes and 1 no to it. All amendments offered were turned down by his colleagues in the subcommittee.
As for HR 5924, I think no one even touched it and did not go through what was done in HR 5882 and just got votes of 5 yes and 2 nos.
It was postponed for tomorrow (8/1/08 at 9AM) because there were no quorum (most prob. some went home already because it was much too late because of the pseudo-filibuster done on HR 5882) but the overall impression was that both HR 5882 and HR 5924 were generally accepted by the majority of the members of the subcommittee and will try and finish it when there is quorum tomorrow morning.
