Outpost nursing in Moose Factory - New Grad?

Has anyone worked in remote northern ontario communities as a new grad? Moose Factory is hiring new grad RNs in their Weeneebayko hospital...its a 37 bed hospital and its 1 RN on nights, 2 RPN's and PSW's apparently. I don't know the exact ratio on the day shift but its more than 1 RN

Would this position be too difficult for a new grad to start out in? I talked to a recruiter and she told me they send you to a 6 week obstetric course in Kingston as eventally you are expected to assist with deliveries...

Has anyone worked in this hospital or similar outpost nursing jobs? How was the work environment, staff, support, etc?

Hello,

I just received a position in the family medicine clinic, outpatient in moose factory as a RPN. I have never been there and would love to hear from someone who has. Also I have a five year old and was wondering if it is a good idea to move up there with him, how are the schools there and is there any recreation or things for him to do up there?

I'm a new Grad who will be working at a nursing station above Moose factory, as a part of James Bay hospital. Any advice for me? I'm a little scared! but super exited! I'm just waiting for my CRNE results so I can go up!

Also, I've heard from 2 new grad that loved attawapiskat. Also, the orientation that they have promised me is pretty extensive.

I have some friends with significant knowledge of this topic. To quote one, " I wouldnt suggest new grads come north....and especially not Attawapiskat...

up here you work as an NP pretty much...I cross paths with many new grads and well...they're new..." and the other one said regarding New.RN's post, "Sounds like someone's been blowing sunshine up someone's @$$." It's really easy to make promises that never see the light of day.

Had a patient medivac'd in from up north the other week. The settlement nurse had years of experience (could see it in her charting) but to quote the flight crew that brought him into us "she was glad to get him on the flight".

He was a mess and unless you have a lot of trauma experience, I think he would have been in pretty bad shape with a "fresh" nurse being his primary caregiver.

Hello, How is the family medicine position going for you? I seen the position posted on the hospital website so I applied. Well they called me the other day asking if I was still interested in the position. My boys and I are moving to moose factory and my start date is Aug. 23rd. Let me know how your experience is going! Take care!

I will be going there to work as an outpost nurse and I am a new grad.

Specializes in PICU.

I have been watching this thread for a while. It would be nice to hear from some of the people who have said they were on their way up in the near future!! I have recently applied the Weeneebayko Health Authority. I have wanted to try outpost nursing since graduation but knew that I wanted a few years experience before I "was it" The learning curve from grad to actual practice is huge! I have been in ER and PICU for 6 years, travel nursing for 3. I think being able to draw from expereince is huge! Can make the difference between life and death. At the end of the day its your license on the line and someone elses life. In any case, would be nice to hear how others have found the process. Travel, housing, survival etc...Thanks
