Nursing in Ireland

Hi, This board doesn't seem too active, but I will try anyway. If there are any nurses out there from Ireland I would like to hear from you. I am an American nurse with 30 years experience, currently working NICU.

Basically, I want to a recruiter to see this and offer me a job. Thanks...

You need to check with an Bord if you have the required hours for registration from both a clinical and theory point of view.

Also the Irish economy is in the toilet. Friends of mine who graduated in the last few months can't get jobs...........5 years ago I had 3 offers from different wards in my hospital for work. Friends of mine who were on fixed term contracts are being let go. They cannot find work in the Republic or Northern Ireland and are moving to Great Britain or Australia. I left before it got so bad so I was lucky.....It was a choice for me.

Wards and hospitals are closing. The hospital I worked at is closing 40 beds out of 300. Cutting 100 nursing & allied health staff. Reduced its ortho theatre lists to 2 a week (used to be 2 theatres 4 times a week). Nurses and other public services have taken a 25% pay cut in order to keep jobs.

Most of the hospitals in Ireland are run by the HSE the public hospital system. It is grossly over budget. There are a few private hospitals in Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Galway that have acute services. There a private nursing homes most with state paid for beds for pt that need long term care.

It is pretty hard on the job front is what I am saying at the min. My brother is a carpenter and he has had to move to the UK for work. Half of my class are in Australia or New Zealand or the UK. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your honesty.. Maybe it will change in a year ha wishful thinking.

If that was the case you would be fighting me for a job cause even though I love it in Oz but it just a bit far away from home! Can't exactly pop home if I need a home cooked meal and a bit of TLC!

But at least summer will soon be here Down Under!

I hope that things work out for you.

Ha not much of a fight I'm obviously the weaker candidate..ha good luck to u too!

Do you know process if you become a nurse in ireland, as a foreign student? (from U.S.)

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

If you train outside the US and plan on registering and becoming a licensed nurse after training all requirements are usually listed on the state board of nursing in the state you plan on registering with. Most require some form of involvement with CGFNS in the for of CES which is a breakdown on your transcripts
