Nurse Re: Nigerian Nurses
I am not a Nigerian nurse but I am an RN who instructs a LTC CNA instruction course and have a nigerian lady in my class. After a few classes, I knew this lady was more than just a person wanting to get a CNA. She is a very private person but I asked her about her education and at first told me she was a nurse, but in Nigeria they do not use the same terms as here. Then a week or so later I ask her what kind of education she had. I was floored when she told me she was a nurse midwife and had spent around six years in school. I truly believe this lady is lost in the system. I think she just doesn't know how to wade through the red tape and is sufferring from some culture shock. These systems are sometimes so detailed it loses the best of us. Can anyone please help me to help this lady and return her to her profession. I would deeply appreciate any feed back anyone can give me.

I would suggest starting point would be the state BON and meet their requirements for foreign trained nurse. May take a few months to get sorted and obtain eligibility to sit NCLEX but working as a CNA should help her.

I agree with silverdragon's reply, start with the state BON and go from there. When I was back in nigeria, most nurses took the CGFNS before they got to U.S.A. Also, she might be in the process right now and is just getting her CNA before the RN license comes. I have heard of nigerian doctors, pharmacists and many other proffesionals go the CNA route before working in their real proffession.

Thank you for your help. I spoke with Martina today and she told me that she had to go to Houston, TX and speak to Kaplan about the NCLEX course/exam she had already paid for. . We are in Missouri. I never thought to ask her if she was aware that each state has a different board of nursing. And each state has its own license. I will let her know when she returns this weekend what you all have said. Once again thank you for your help.

I think it is nice that you are willing to help her to get where she needs to be. Good for you.
