Both parties are pushing immigration crackdown

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are pushing bills that crack down on illegal immigration, keeping the issue alive in Congress during a volatile election year.

In the House, conservative Democrats are asking their party leaders to support an enforcement bill sponsored by freshman Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina.

The legislation, dubbed the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement Act or SAVE Act, would increase the Border Patrol by 8,000, train more state and local police to enforce immigration law, and require that all businesses, within four years, use a government program to verify the legal status of their employees.

The program, known as E-Verify, is currently voluntary. Businesses and civil-rights groups have argued that the poor quality of some government databases poses a major problem for the program.

Shuler said that his legislation is a bi-partisan solution to the pressing problem of illegal immigration that costs taxpayers millions in schooling, health care, and incarceration costs.

Meanwhile, in the Senate, Republicans introduced 15 immigration enforcement bills this week.

They include measures to make English the nation's official language, to prevent illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses, to deport immigrants convicted of drunk driving offenses, and to withhold federal money for cities that have so called "sanctuary" policies that direct police and local officials not to check the immigration status of residents using city services.

A bill by Georgia Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson would clarify the authority of state and local police to enforce immigration law and expand training in the area.

There is much being written on this very topic in almost every Asian-American newspaper that we have over here in CA. This is quite a serious matter and more and more are getting deported all of the time.

ICE has increased their presence all over the place.

Although I have nothing against any illegal immigrants personally, I'm very glad that the government is finally getting more "assertive" about enforcing our laws.

i wonder if these same folks are for universal health care . . :confused:

AZ just passed a law recently that punishes employers who hire illegals. We are seeing it's effect already.

Lots of families are fleeing to nearby states or back to Mexico. A lot of kids are being pulled out of schools, so it's affecting schools and jobs within the schools.

Illegal immigrants account for about 10% of workers here in AZ. Definitely going to continue effecting us, and this is just the beginning.

a factory here was investigated and was found to be employing over 300 illegals. they all left the area with their families. this particular small city had higher car insurance rates than the nearby large city due to the fact that there were many uninsured illegals driving. people are hoping the insurance rates will now go down. wal-mart is now much less crowded on pay day.

People need to take responsibility for their actions, including their children. They knew before they came here that they did not have the legal documents to be here, and for those that overstayed their visa, same thing goes.

We could not expect to be in another country without a legal document for being there, we definitely would not have it as easy as many do here.

People need to take responsibility for their actions, including their children. They knew before they came here that they did not have the legal documents to be here, and for those that overstayed their visa, same thing goes.

We could not expect to be in another country without a legal document for being there, we definitely would not have it as easy as many do here.

where on this entire earth could we sneak into another country and take advantage of their welfare system, their health care system, obtain a drivers license, not pay taxes, etc, etc...and live happily ever after? :angryfire

it does happen in the uk, we even get people who travel to the uk just for treatment and then turn round afterwards saying they have no money to pay. i have even seen it on the news when asking illegal immigrants heading to the uk that their intentions are to come to the uk for the money and benefits with no intention of working :angryfire

i find it so sad that things like this happen as it is usually the citizens from the country that suffer. i also get angry when i see people think it is their given right to demand treatment when they have paid absolutely nothing towards the health care of that country. don't get me wrong if they are on holiday and something happens then fine i have no issues it is when they know they are doing it that gets me mad
