new to US, will I be able to get a job...

Hi I have started all the necessary stuff to register here but my job in the Uk was Occupational Health which I never managed to finish my degree, long story but father ill, sole career, father died, pregnant with twins...husband gets job in US, However I do have my critical care course, little rusty 8 years since I did it, do you think I will be able to get jobs in either of these fields, love them both for very different reasons, also did OR for 18 months (worst nurse of the year award for that I was Pants,) and elderly care ortho rehab loved that, oh I am living in New England and have been Qualified 15 yrs, stopped work May 08 what are my chances??

Welcome to the US.

Registration has many facets here, it is not usually just one application. Depending on the state that you are in, will determine what else that you will need to do. The majority of the states require that you have the CES, which is a credential's eval done by CGFNS before they will look at your application for licensure. And then the NCLEX-RN exam would need to be written and passed before an employer can offer you a job.

Next, what type of visa do you actually have for the US? Not all spousal visas will permit you to work, so that will be my first question to you since we are under a retrogression at this time that you will be affected by if you need to apply for a visa that will permit you to work.

How long have you been out of the acute care hospital?

My Occupational Health Job was in the Acute Care setting dealing with the staff and outside contacts as well as immunisation programs and I was very lucky as we had alot of disaster management for terrorism ect, but I would really say 8 year since I did Acute Nursing, I am on an L2 blanket so can apply for work permit, thank goodness only been here 5 weeks and I am bored.... applied for the Cert of Forgien Nurse grads, then I have to do the NCLEX, I am under no illusions a friend of mine who is an American Citizen, came home after doing her training in the UK, and ended up working in a bar...came back to the UK after 18 months.

Oh and the other thing I meant to ask, are Hospitals generally open to people shadowing staff (obviously no pay or hands on for me) so they can get a little bit more up to speed or is there such a thing as back to nursing or forgein nurses practice programs like there is in the UK? for the hands on side, exams are all very well but culture and practice can be very different? again thanks

No shadowing allowed due to HIPPA regulations. You maybe able to volunteer but usually these positions are in a non clinical areas.

There are RN refresher courses, you will be assigned a Preceptor where you will be allowed in the clinical areas. That sounds like it may be a better fit for you.

If you volunteer in an agency you will be given HIPPA training, you will not have any access to any patient data.

If you do a refresh course, which are located in community and regular colleges, they have policies for data protection. I do believe you will need a RN License though, but I would check with the individual school.

Best of luck, sounds like you have much to offer, if you were to volunteer you would be a nautral for the adminstrative office for diaster planning.

You actually need to hold a US license in order to take a refresher program here.

You do not need the CGFNS exam for most states, at most the CES, which is a credentials review. Not sure which state that you will be working in.
