New US Student Nurse wanting information on the UK

Hello all UK nurses!

I was wondering if you all could give me some information about working as a registered nurse in London after graduating from an accredited BSN program in America. I am going to start my 2 year BSN course in August and will graduate in May 2011. What exactly are the procedures to work in London. Would I have to go to school there, or would my certification from America be sufficient? Any information would be helpful. Also, how long is the process to get certified to work in London.. so that I have an idea of what to expect and if it would be possible to get the paperwork started early.

Without experience in an area on the job shortage occupation list you are going to find it very hard as a new grad to get a sponsor for a work permit. You will need to meet NMC requirements for overseas nurse and pass a English exam. Jobs are UK then EU before rest of world

I should have provided more infomation in my initial post, I am planning on graduating in may 2011, and hopefully securing a job short after that. I will not be planning on thinking about moving to the UK until 2013 or 2014. I read through the NMC Overseas link that you posted, and I did find the information but I was confused, because it seems like they want the people who are registering with the NMC to have 3 years of education and experience in each sector of nursing for example: psychiatry, pediatrics, maternity.. etc.. could you possibly clear that up for me and give me more information on that??

The nurse training in the UK is 3 years so the NMC would expect equivalent academic study to register as a nurse in the UK, within that training you must demonstrate that you have covered the required areas such as mental health, adult, midwifery and paediatrics.

I believe you would also need to have at least one year work experience
