New To NCLEX - Please Advice

Hi,

I came across this absolutly fantastic forum. This is a blessing. I read for hours and have decided to go the following path. Please advice.

I am on H4 visa,in Virginia, did 3 year Nursing frim India, 5 years back, but never really worked. But now I want to work here in the USA.

I am thinking of applying to Vermont for exam. From the forum discussions I understand Vermont is fastest, does not require SSN and also vermont does not require CVS like NY. Is this route correct?

Also after I pass NCLEX can I transfer my license to Virginia or for that matter any other state? Does Vermont require CGFNS exam as a pre-requisite?

PLEASE advice

Vermont doesn't require the CGFNS exam or the CES. But you need to find out the specifics for the state where you wish to work. If they have requirements, then it would be any faster for you. Plus you still need to prepare for the exam, and you are looking at minimum of three months if you do not have any nursing experience to speak of, plus you trained in another country. So, going the Vermont route may not be the best for you.

You are still going to need to endorse your license, take the English exams, and get a Visa Screen Certificate.

Please read the stickies at the top of the page first..............

Hello suzanne,

Thanks a lot for the quick response. Thanks much to this great site without which people like me would never have imagined of applying myself without agencies.
I read most of the stickys but still I have a few more doubts after reading your reply; Please Pardon my ignorance.

1. If I pass NCLEX in Vermont, they would issue me a hard license without SSN or CGFNS. Can't I just endorse it to Virginia?(or any other state in US). From previous posts you adviced the same with New York, which also doesn't require CGFNS or CES.

2. Is there a time limit for applying to pearson for exam and/or ATT after Vermont issues me the go ahead to test? I mean after all my papers are cleared with the state board must I immediatly apply for exam or can I schedule it according to my confidence level?

Please advice.

The NCLEX exam has reciprocity with all states, but each state can set their own requirements. Some do not require the CGFNS exam at all, and some require that you get a CES, credentials eval done by CGFNS. Some will let you endorse without either of those, and some will still want the CGFNS exam, even though you have a license in another state.

Nursing licenses do not have reciprocity, they can be endorsed. Please read the sticky at the top of the page concerning this. So it depends on which state that you are going to work in. Mosr going to the US wish to work in the larger states. It is also the easiest to submit one set of applications and then CGFNS obtains all of the required documents for you.
If you are alrady in the US, it is more difficult to obtain the transcripts, etc. from your school, etc.

----------------
I am not sure of the requirements of Virginia as far as licensure, this is something that you will need to look up. And you will need to see what is required for endorsement.

But if you have not started to prepare yet, then there is no reason to try to go the route of Vermont, it will take you at least three months to get ready for the exam.

You schedule the exam according to when you are ready, most states give you one year. But you are missing the point, unless you need to take the exam immediately, there is no reason for you to go the route of Vermont. You will still need to endorse to Virginia. You still need to take the English exams, you still need to get a Visa Screen Certificate.

Thanks much again for the quick response.(I don't know what I would do without this forum !)

Two more questions, Please be patient with me !

What if I don't take the NCLEX exam within one year after the BON sends me approval to take it? Will I have to do all over again or just send the fees for renewal?

What happenes If I fail NCLEX? Is there a limit to the number of times I can take it?

You would need to send in another application, there is nothing to renew since you haven't taken the exam yet and do not have a license.

Each state is different with the number of times that you can take the exam before you are required to take some additional classes, just get thru the exam the first time.
