Hi, I am from PI here in SE Asia. Nurses here face different situations depending on the hospital they work at. There is a big difference in working in a public/government owned and private hospitals. But in terms of OT pay, I think its the same that it is too litte.

From where I worked, OT pay for every hour is around 8% or more of my minimum day salary. I used to file every OT even if its just for an hour as to add up to my salary. Some dont bother to file an hour OT anymore as it is too low . But during holidays, pay is double. It depends on hospital or ward rules on who is to take up a shift of an absent staff. In our area, the person who has a day off the next day will take over the absents shift. We were forced to extend to 12 hour shift when we are really understaffed and have lot of unstable pts.

In terms of nurse pt ration, it could reach to 1:50 for public hospitals. During my OJT at one of these hospitals, we were assigned at maternity ward where 2-3 new mothers have to share one bed. Nurses have to deal with this understaffed and overcrowded situation. One is unable to render attention and quality care to each of the patient, hence, one is not able to practice the ideal nursing care. Nurses here develop resourcefulness and versatility. In private hospitals that I've been exposed to maximum could be 8 considering that they are all stable. 1:3 for those that are in the suites so that more attention as what they have paid for which is more expensive.

Once as a student we were assigned at the delivery room. All our pts are service/charity and all of them are to deliver vaginal section. One pt kept asking for pain reliever during the procedure of delivery and episiotomy. The dr informed her that Lidocaine was already injected when in fact there is none. I think in this hospital they discourage these mothers to not get impregnate again by making them feeeel the pain. They dont even allow the pt to cry out loud.


Those are some that we have to deal with.
