Moving to Hawaii from UK - What quals are required?

by AaronC

My fiancee and I are looking at moving to Hawaii in about 12 months and are looking to find out what qualifications are required to work as a nurse there. We are both qualified nurses with IV training. Any info would be welcome. Thanks.

I'll move this to the International Forum, there's lots of info there about working in the US.

The Honolulu Advertiser and the Star Bulletin are the newspapers--you can check the classifieds for job availibility and housing costs. (get ready for a very high cost of living!)

Welcome to Allnurses.com and the International Forum.

The biggest issue that you will have is when did you graduate from your training program? What is your specialty? Training in the UK is now quite different from that of the US, as well as Canada. If you graduated in the past few years, you are going to have a couple of classes that you will need to make up before you will even be permitted to sit for our licensing exam.

You will also have immigration procedures to follow afterwards, so it is going to be quite hard for you to be working in HI within 12 months, if you need classes to be made up.

Both of you are going to need to sit for National Boards.

You also need to contact the Hawaii Board of Nursing and apply for a license after passing your Boards. Here's a link to the contact page..

Here is a link to a document about foreign grad requirements for Hawaii
www.hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/pvl/main/ reports/CGFNS_2004%20Annual_Legislature_Report.pdf

You are going to need a work visa and a hospital or other organization to sponsor you. I know there are companies here that recruit internationally I just don't know who they are but I did find one link...

Before anything can be done, if you graduated in the past few years, you are going to need to make up courses before you will even be permitted to sit for the NCLEX exam. And that is only the first step of the immigration process.

You need to go thru the first step first, and make sure that your curriculum is accepted. But if recent, then it will not be. UK training is no longer the same as US or Canadian training.
