MD to RN via Excelsior

Hi,

I am new here and am still trolling thru the many nuggets of great advice and wisdom shared by a lot of really helpful ppl.

I am looking for the answer to this Q:

I am an MD wanting to transition into RN and want to transfer all my educational and professional credits into an RN (BSN?) degree via Excelsior or a similar school.

Any advice will be very highly highly appreciated!!

Well, I just took a workshop for the clinical exam and there were two people who had been physicians in China doing the program. Give them a call.

While Excelsior (formerly known as regent college), is one of the largest college to provide nursing degrees, there are quite a few nursing boards (including IDFPR) that don't recognize some of their courses. Be careful while selecting a nursing school, do research on accreditation (of course), and where there graduates end up, etc.

I think there already is a sticky on the top of this forum, that discusses in detail about the MD to RN program.

Thanks all for replying. I did track down the MD to Rn thread, and found the Russian MD who also did the RN program via excelsior. He seemed very encouraging.

I also with the Ohio nursing board and they too nodded approval of the excelsior program.

so far so good.

my one other major concern is that hopefully if i do successfully finish the NCLEX requriements will hospitals hire me with only this certification and a non-nursing medical experience?

are there hospitals in the cincinnati ohio area that will hire a fresh grad with no 'hands on ' nursing experience under their belt?

any opinions or ideas on how to counter that?

That is going to be the other problem that you may encounter. But if you can get thru it, and can get licensed, then you may qualify for a refresher program in your area. They do require the actual RN license from your state before you can take it.

Best of luck to you.

But one other caveat to throw into this, in case you ever move; you may have issues getting licensed in the new state. And this is something to consider as well.

I am a new Member, I just find out this website. I am a MD in China, and I am still wroking on my English. I am living in South San Francisco, California. I have read some posts from you guys, and I would like to know more information about this MD-RN program especially practice in CA (My family is here). Can you guys tell me more information about it?

CA does not accept this program for licensure, so it most definitely would not work for you. You would never be able to work in CA with this training.

There is another program I've heard of that have the MD to RN is in Puerto Rico, you do it by distance learning and the practice at the end is 9 weeks on site at a hospital there. You can check their web site to get more info and even call them if you like. A friend of mine just finished and told me is ok, she is getting ready for the exam now.

As mentioned, always check directly at the BON that you are interested in getting licensed with to make sure that the program is accepted by them.

Not all of the distance learning programs meet the requirements for licensure in all 50 states.
