Level III NICU in Melbourne?

  1. I am hoping somebody can provide me some information about working in Melbourne. I am from the US and want to work in Aus. A recruiter I talked to from Acclaim suggested I work in Melbourne which sounded good to me. I am in the process of applying for my VIC license. Since I am a foreign nurse I am thinking I should go through a recruiter to find a job. Has anyone here dealt with Acclaim? Is it a good agency to go with or would you suggest another? I work in NICU level III and would like to do the same in Melbourne or elsewhere in VIC. On the web I only found one level III NICU. Does anyone know what choices I have for NICU or is there only one level III in the area? I would appreciate any advice

The Mercy Hospital for Women doesn't come right out and say `we have a level three NICU' lol....but they do claim to have neonatal paediatric services, and have level three teaching accreditation in it..so I guess this means they have a unit? I don't know for sure, but you could always ask 'em

Then there is the Royal Children's Hospital which is probably the one you came across yourself.

According to this site the Monash medical Centre also has a NICU, but I couldn't find much info....might be more special care than level three...

There is also NETS associated with the Royal Women's/Children's Hospitals...looks like an interesting job!

There are of course other cities in Australia that have NICU's....

This page if you scroll down gives a good list of hospitals in Oz....not all with NICU's of course, but you may come across one or two that look interesting.

    Hope that helps some.

ooops...forgot about the recruiters part of the question. I really have no idea if Acclaim is good or not. I know that in looking to move to California myself after I graduate I have mostly given up on the idea of using a recruitment agency - too hard to find one that everyone agrees is good, and most want a couple of years experience before they'll take you. I have found a hospital that is willing to consider sponsoring me as a new grad directly (in San Diego) so I'm gonna cut out the middle man so to speak. Not that that applies to you as you obviously have some years of experience behind you

I don't know if hospitals here in Oz will sponsor directly or not, but there's no harm in asking!

You don't have to confine yourself to Melbourne (dreadful weather) or to an agency. Apply directly to a hospital - they do not neccessarily advertise job vacancies but would definitely be interested in your CV.

Try the Womens and Childrens Hospital in Adelaide South Australia.
GREAT place, WONDERFUL lifestyle, CHEAPER than almost all the other capital cities for housing, living expenses etc. Approx 8 hours travelling by car to Melbourne. Easy access to the fabulous South East of South Australia.
FANTASTIC lifestyle, BEAUTIFUL mediterranian type weather.

You are welcome to PM me if you want more info.

    Best wishes in your quest.
    Regards,
    Grace

Thank you all very much for all the input. I have already applied to Victoria for my nursing license which is why I am somewhat zeroed in on Melbourne and Victoria. I guess I may try to look around, and then apply for a license elsewhere (or else I will be paying for extra licenses). I like the sound of Adelaide, I will check into that. What I am most looking for are good nurse to Pt ratios, and NICU with higher accuity patients. Not that I dislike feeder growers, but I like the challenging assignments with ventilators, iNO , and Pressors as well. Sometimes it happens to travelers in the US, that they end up stuck with 4 and 5 baby feeder grower assignments all the time. Thanks again for all the input, I think I will look around.
