Looks like the government is falling in line with Wales and Scotland with some free prescriptions, the plans are for those who have cancer will be entitled to free prescriptions

BBC news

Patients with long-term conditions will get free prescriptions in England under plans announced by the prime minister.

Charges for cancer patients will be scrapped from next year with other conditions to follow afterwards, Gordon Brown told the Labour Party conference.

It comes after charges were scrapped in Wales last year and are in the process of being phased out in Scotland.

because we are now resident in the us, if we return we are supposed to pay for any treatment until we have been back, i think its 6 months, so who chases all these visitors and immigrants to pay? if it had happened over here, then they would chase you to the other side of the world to get their money back, so why does the uk allow this abuse of their system.

if you are a british citizien/resident and leave the country for more than 3 months, you are supposed to surrender your nhs card as you are no longer entitled to nhs care. which can make life difficult for the old dears who spend the winter in spain! you have to live here for 6mths before you are entiled to nhs care.

we try hard to enforce the rules.. but then they just go to a&e and get seen there!

not sure how it works in other countries..

we didnt surrender anything, but i do know that our gp has sent our records to a central storage place as we are no longer there. so we have paid into the uk system for many years, but still have to wait the 6 months for free treatment if we do return, we just accept the systems, even although we dont agree with them, but it just appears to be more abused in the uk than over here, the only ones who can abuse it over are people with nothing, which of course includes the drug users and street people.

Cariad if you pitch up at A and E with a problem and gave your old GP's name I doubt anyone would even check.

ah way too honest!!! we have no way of knowing if you have moved. we only find out if you tell us or if we try to contact you and cant. sometimes we find out when another person tries to register with us at your old address then we click... hmmm 9 people in a 2 bed flat..??? we have an asian family who have had 3 children here and lots of treatment- we found out they actually live in india and are using a cousins address (they moved 4 yrs ago and didnt tell us- we found out when the new owners tried to register with us).

so you are just too honest and obviously dont know how to play the system!

if you need treatment, yes go to a&e and give your old gp's address.. no one checks!
