Entry into australia

Hiya,

Im nursing in the UK but looking to come to Australia to nurse for a few years/possibly move. I was wondering if someone could give me info on a past criminal record and gaining entry into australia?? if u have a partner who has a criminal record as a teenager (for stealing a car) but has been good for many years since would that exclude him from being allowed into Australia or New Zealand??? thanks for your help

A criminal conviction can prevent issuing of a visa, but the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship takes a variety of factors, including length of time since the offence and character since, into account. Without question the worst thing you can do is not disclose it, as this - if uncovered - automatically results in a three year exclusion period.

From a quick read of the website, particularly the character requirement fact sheet, the biggest issues are frequency of convictions and potential for recidivism here:
The character test
A person will fail the character test where:
  • they have a substantial criminal record
  • they have, or have had, an association with an individual, group or organisation suspected of having been, or being, involved in criminal conduct
  • having regard to the person's past and present criminal conduct, the person is found not to be of good character
  • having regard to the person's past and present general conduct, the person is found to be not of good character
  • there is a significant risk that the person will engage in criminal conduct in Australia, harass, molest, intimidate or stalk another person in Australia, vilify a segment of the Australian community, or incite discord in the Australian community or in a segment of that community, or represent a danger to the Australian community or a segment of that community.
(emphasis in original)
So it sounds as though your partner will be fine in Australia; as far as I know NZ has similar entry requirements. Hope that helps!

Thread moved to the International Forum since it is specific to immigration and licensure issues.

Thanks for your understanding on this. Please refer to the red banner at the top of the Aussie forum for any questions concerning this.

ms. Suzanne,
I also had a question concerning this topic.
I don't know where should I start.
I'm just a newly grad here in the Philippines. I plan of working in Australia (specially Sydney because my Aunt and her family are there). Um... can I first work as a volunteer nurse in Australia and had my training there (Is there a school who would train nurses from foreign country?) Also, how much is the training? Thank you very much.

oops.. I had posted in wrong thread.

This is the link you need to go to for the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board.

http://www.nmb.nsw.gov.au/Am-I-Eligible/default.aspx

It explains your eligibility and requirements for English proficiency etc.

They require that you have a local license as a start, will not even consider you for the bridge program without having that already done and passed. They do not have volunteer or training programs as your country does, but they do have a bridge program that you will need to complete if you meet their other requirements first.

You will also need to take and pass the IELTS exam and get excellent scores on each section as well.

Best of luck to you.

Please read the threads concerning licensure in Australia. No reason for me to go into other things here on the same topic.

First question is whether or not you have a local license, they will not consider you without that.

Hi suzanne,

I have to ask if they require overseas educated nurses to have experience first before they undergo the bridging program? Coz I have already applied for the initial registration to NMBWA and am waiting for their letter for the bridging courses. I am just making sure I am taking the right steps.
