Care for elderly people in thailand

I'm working as a journalist in Berlin/Germany on an article for a

nursing magazine about care for elderly people in thailand. Can anbody here give

me some information, actual data, examples and so on about this topic?

e.g. How many old people's homes and how many places are there in

thailand? How many private hospitals offer long-term care? What can you

say about the standards in these institutions? Is there a special

educating programme for nurses for elderly? How many nurses are working

in this field?

Is there anbody on the list working in an old people's home in thailand? Can you give me first hand information about the working situation?

And do anybody know something about old people's "care tourism" from europe and the united states to thailand?

Thank you a lot and regards

Jörg

Hi Suzanne & Jorg,

Presently I'm in Thailand we are looking to start up a business related to mobility care equipments. As most of us know that there are only few steps or measurements were taken to help the elderly and disable people in Thailand we have taken the initiative to bring some valuble products to Thailand with the collaboration of a leading UK company who is providing mobility care in UK.

However it is always better to do some market research before starting the business and therefore if you can provide me the following details that would be highly appreciated,

1) How many elderly homes in Thailand and how can i get the contact details of those?

2) Are the hospitals in Thailand is eager to provide a better service to teh disables and eldery people?

3) If yes, what are the names of the hotels that are famous for eldery care?

4) Still are there many Europeans coming to Thailand and planning their retirement here?

Thanks,

Darshana

Things change very quickly there, and what is available now, may not be available then. Again, best bet is for them to stay in their own place with private duty nursing care. That will actually be the most cost effective for them, and they will get the best of care. If they are English speaking only, the two best places would be either Bangkok area or Chiang Mai, the medical care that is available in those two areas will be the closest to what is in the US. All services are provided, not so in the other areas.

Like its neighbours Thailand and South Korea,1-3 China is facing the challenge of a rapidly ageing population. The proportion of people aged over 65 reached 6.9% in 2000 and is predicted to be as high as 22.7% in 2050.4 Although the Chinese population is currently younger than the UK population (which in 2002 had 16% of people over 65),5 the proportion of older people is growing faster than in the UK. People over 60 currently make up 10.9% of the population in China, projected to rise to 31.0% in 2050, compared with 21.2% rising to 29.4% in the United Kingdom.6

Hi Roland,

Many thanks for the information provided. These information are really helpful.

By the way do you have statistics related to Thailand? Growing elderly populations etc.?

Looking forward to hear more details from you and once again appreciate your time and reply.

Darshana

In Thailand is not common practice to place eldery in Homes for aging. It is seen as disrespectful and not common practice.

As Suzanned said many generation live in one house, and this is the culture. Family can hire helpers or live in maids very cheap to help care for the eldery if it needed as well.

Suzanne has kind of of retired from the board as a mod. Haven't seen her post in months. You could try PMing her. She might be picking up messages, or post onto her profile page??

Hi,

Thank you for the information provided.

Just like Carer's Allowance, there should be other provisions like medical or leave or personal and even deductions. Carers too have a right to ask for claims for all the labour they put in. And all this should be legally backed with legislations by the lawmakers of the country.
