Canadian wanting to write the NCLEX

Hi everyone, I just need some advice

I am planning on writing the nclex exam in the next few months as I am not working at the moment and I have time to study for it. I have NO plans to work in the US for at least a year, but I want to write the exam just to see if I can pass and to keep options open. I know you have to go through a state board before you can do anything. my question is, what is the best state to go though for a Canadian nurse in terms of fees, paperwork (the less the better), and quick processing times. If anyone can help me out that would be awesome. Thanks

I personally would say it would depend on which state you plan on working as each one will have different requirements on Internationally trained nurses and even when endorsing you generally still have to meet their requirements which will result in more money. If you are not planning on working yet in the US I would say apply to the state you do plan on working in and met their requirements.

If you don't mind endorsing later look at less popular states, like the dakotas, montana etc, once you meet requirements the processing there should be quicker, but I think I would look for one who requires CES , just because that is good for most states, so endorsing is easier later.

Just to clarify, if i do go to the states in a few years, i honestly have no idea where i will go. I just want to do the easiest possible state at this moment in time. Thanks!

Forget Montana, you will need a SSN for that one, you could try North Dakota, they want a background check though, but otherwise it looks ok (it's a compact state)

The point is there is no "easiest" state - if you get a license from say, Vermont, but then decide to work in California later, you still need to then fulfil CA's requirements for foreign-trained nurses.

Just make sure that you choose a state that does not require a SSN before license is issued.

Try Minnesota . Go the minnesota board of nursing and they should have a link "license by Exam" and see what the requirements are.....I don't think you need even a SSN to write the nclex....but you should double check.....Or there in MIchigan.....look thru the web sites . From what I understand from your posting is that you just want to sit for the NCLEx but don't necessarily want to work in the U.S. right away....? Just note that some of the states require other proof of english education also known as CGFNS this is where they certifiy that your classes are in accordance with the states standards..it usually cost a few 100 dollars and it can take months to get the results and some states want this done prior to giving you a license....but it is something to think about, that you may eventually need this document. Just make sure and double check my info....as I am not perfect...ha ha ha ha
Good luck with everything...
