Hi! I don't work in either of those states. But I was thinking of working in a hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. A recruiter once told me that nurses who work in New Haven don't usually live there. It's kinda ghetto. Instead, they live outside of New Haven. Also, having a car or access to a car is useful especially when you are working late. I just got the sense that New Haven isn't all that safe.

I recommend you posting your question on the U.S. Nursing Forum as well. Maybe people from those states or area can tell you more about the city.

Depending on individual hospitals, some hospitals may even fly you down for an interview at their expense. I highly encourage you to take advantage of that. Hey...if it doesn't work out, at least you got a free trip. =)

    All the best to you!

I worked in New Haven for 3 years and I agree that anywhere close to the hospitals there is not really that safe, however there are 'suburbs' such as Branford or East Haven that are quite acceptable. You do need a car however.

I'm an American, but I'm assuming you are interested in info from anyone with familiarity with these areas, not just Canadians ...

I went to school and worked in New Haven for a couple years, and have lived in NC for many, many years. The other posters are right about New Haven -- you probably would not want to live in town, although the city and the university have been working in recent years on a bunch of projects to improve conditions in New Haven proper. Most everybody who can lives outside the city and commutes back and forth. The hospitals are v. good (are you looking at St. Raph's or YNHH?) I had a v. good experience working for YNHH. The cost of living is v. high for the entire area (CT is v. expensive in general, compared to most of the rest of the US). There are excellent libraries, museums, and cultural opportunities because of the university, if that is something that is important to you.

I haven't lived in Fayetteville, but have been to Fayetteville as a mental health inspector/surveyor for my state. Fayetteville (or "Fayette Nam," as a lot of us in NC refer to it :chuckle ) is a military town, with not a lot going on besides the military bases, and businesses that cater to the soldiers (as far as I've been able to see on my several visits there). Lots of tattoo parlors, rental furniture places, and bars/liquor stores ... CFV is the big medical center I have been to as a surveyor, there is also a VA hospital there (no surprise), and I think there's another hospital (that doesn't offer any psychiatric services, so I didn't ever go there to survey). I notice in nursing journals I read that CFV is always recruiting heavily for nurses, and never seems to stop recruiting heavily, which leads me to kinda wonder what's going on there, but I don't know anything specific ...

Hope this info is helpful. Best wishes on your move, wherever you end up!

hey, i worked in durham NC for 2 yrs.. its a college town w/ DUKE and UNC close to each other. lots of canucks in the area at that time. what's it like? hmm well depends on who you talk to and which hospital you are asking about. i believe fayetteville has a large millitary community, theres an ?army? base there. dont know about the hospitals in that area. a buddy of mine worked at YALE in New Haven, he had a good time there, he had no major complaints that he told me about. good luck.
