Any Filipino Nurses Working Outside the Philiipines Planning to Retire Back Home?

I have been working as an RN here in the San Francisco Bay Area, California since 1981. I worked in a very busy county-owned medical center from 1981 to 2008 that has a good retirement policy. I have been working part time as an RN for a private nursing agency since my retirement from my hospital job, but my wife and I have been itching to retire in the Philippines where my pension from the hospital will stretch that much farther than it is here in the expensive SF Bay Area.

We will be taking a much-anticipated two-week vacation to the Philippines in a couple of months, and we plan to scour the Metro Manila area for places where we can retire. Since I have been away from the Philippines for so long, I would appreciate suggestions from fellow nurses, in the Philippines or from abroad, regarding this subject matter. I am in my early 50's and I enjoy physical activities outside the house, but my wife would rather walk inside a shopping mall.

Is it better to live in Metro Manila with its rich culture, better hospitals, lots of night life and many places to go. Does its terrible traffic, environmental pollution and over-population outweigh the benefits?

Any suggestions as to where my wife and I can visit in the Metro Area? I've heard of Serendra, it is supposed to be a nice place with upscale shopping and nice places to eat. We have been to the place named Greenbelt in Makati in 2005, therefore we want to visit another place. We will also be spending three nights and four days in Boracay Island.

Question to Filipino nurses working abroad, and to nurses in the Philippines who plan to go abroad: Do you plan to spend your "Golden Years" in the Philippines when that time comes?

Hi! I am coincidentally from the San Francisco area as well. We also plan to retire in the Philippines when the time comes. We were in the Philippines last year and the year before that. Love the food, as always! I would choose to retire in the province where there is no air pollution and the cost of living is low. And you know your neighbors. Yeah, you should choose to live near a modern hospital just in case you yourself would need medical care in the future especially in an emergency. I believe they now have modern hospitals in bigger towns or cities outside the Manila area. Also the shopping malls are spreading outside Manila area so you don't have to go to Manila to go shopping. Nice! And no traffic! Yesssss!!! I suggest choose a place near the sea so that you get fresh seafood from the market, and cheaper too. Then you can go swimming in the hot months of the year. We are about 10 years away from retirement but we may choose to take early retirement. The life here is too stressful! Bummer!
