by sassy_squirrel Jul 13, '10hello again,
well i've decided to apply to a couple of different uni when applications open next month. however i'm starting to feel a little anxious about it all. i do have mild anxiety (i'm not on anything for it) but i'm worrying about things already and i haven't even applied yet.
nursing really interests me and i really like helping people but i'm just having a few reservations after a couple of things. i don't have children (don't want them either but that's not relevant) so i have pets instead. a handraised bird and a puppy. now my bird has twice flown into fans and hurt herself. the second time was quite bad and she knocked herself out. she is okay now and we have made modifications to how and where we take her out now so no issues there. but my worry was that i didn't handle the situation very well (yes i stressed out - it was my baby injured, bleeding and having seizures). i'm hoping this is just because it was an emotional link but it still worries me (chronic worrier here).
i've had other things too that i've kept my calm in - like my husband having chest pains and having to drive him to the hospital (admittedly i drove prolly a little faster than usual but still.) i was able to tell the doctor and nurses his symptoms and his medical background and what medication usually helped (he couldn't talk due to the pain).
i've had a few people say that they think nursing suits me so i'm hoping i'm just overreacting but did anyone else feel like this before they started studying, or even during and/or after studying?

I know when my children were little if they came running up to me holding something bleeding I just about 'died' inside.sassy_squirrel likes this. - Jul 15, '10 by sydneymum14Exactly, I'm great with everyone's pooh, blood, vomit, but when my son had broken his leg and I had to hold his hand when they changed his cast, I went greeen and nearly fainted..was so mad at my self. Also felt funny as a teenager having to give the cat a flu shot.sassy_squirrel likes this.

- Jul 18, '10 by carolmaccas66Girl you are acting quite normal! You always worry more with family members & pets. When my 2 beautiful black cats died - who had comforted me through many awful things - I was pretty much a mess. I still get depressed thinking about them to this day - & miss them +++.
You will be a great nurse by the sounds of it. What uni's are you going through?
And have you heard anything yet?sassy_squirrel likes this. - Jul 18, '10 by FranniENNursing is a very high stress job. Studying is a very high stress activity. You will need a lot of drive and good support to be able to do it, but if you can muster that, you can get through it. Good lucksassy_squirrel likes this.
- Jul 18, '10 by sassy_squirrelQuote from carolmaccas66Thanks Carol. I haven't been able to apply yet as I have to go through SATAC (for UniSA) but I have the date applications open in my calendar so I can apply straight away. I'm looking at UniSA for the correspondence course. I'll be living in Hobart by then so it'll only be a short commute (in comparison to Darwin travel) for clinicals and lab blocks.Girl you are acting quite normal! I'm also applying for the accelerated degree at Tasmania Uni but I'll need to work as well as go to uni (mortgage payments). I'm thinking of doing a Medical Administration course so I can apply for work in the Healthcare setting while studying coz I think that'll benefit me. - Jul 18, '10 by sassy_squirrelQuote from FranniENThanks Franni. I've already completed a Degree at University so I should be fine for the studying part of it. I have got a lot of support from my family luckily.Nursing is a very high stress job.
