To me I didnt have a good experience with SEC. Carna was aware of no experience in Pediatrics or Maternity and yet I had to do SEC. It didnt make any sense to me. I had no time to prepare because I felt I was pushed into doing the assessment and I went into it with an open mind and just tried it. I felt so weirded out by the experience, I still dont get why I did it in the first place. When in the end I have to do the courses in those areas.

I did email CARNA about that and asked if I can jump over the SEC and do the courses. No was the reply

Good luck to those doing the SEC

There is a fee for the SEC assessment and for any remediation required. Please see here for a current list of CARNA fees:http://www.nurses.ab.ca/Carna/index....ructureID=1761

Note: If there were no fees charged to the applicant for all of these stages of assessment, the registration fees of every nurse in the province would have to be increased by at least 50% (to about $675 per nurse) to pay for the associated expenses. Do you think that would be fair?

First of all, thanks for replying!!
The intresting thing, may be, that this is the real reason for those new demands, don't you think so?

2. I know, that the first assessment of CARNA and courses of Mount Royal College have their fees, i asked about fees for SEC itself, i didn"t found this information not on the CARNA's site nor on the Mount Royal College's site.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. CARNA has always charged for any assessment of education or practice for anyone from anywhere. When I moved to Alberta from Manitoba I paid several hundred dollars in fees to both CARNA and CRNM.

The SEC comes out of the fees for assessment of credentials. Once they've assessed your credentials they decide whether you'll need an SEC based on their initial assessment. Mount Royal will then arrange the SEC and tell you what fees are to be charged for that. It will depend on how many different areas need to be assessed. http://www.mtroyal.ca/ProgramsCourse...IENs/index.htm There is nothing specifically related to fees on this site. This page does include information about fees for the Bridge to Canadian Nursing program at Mount Royal: http://www.mtroyal.ca/ProgramsCourse...osts/index.htm

Default sec assesment- what does this mean?
I am a nurse trained and practising in the u.k. Just saw on CARNA's website that i need to undergo SEC assesment in two areas. Does this mean i will be eligible for a restricted temporary permit or application is defered until after SEC? Please helppppppppppppp

sabrino76, I've merged all the threads relating to the Substantively Equivalent Assessment process in Alberta to reduce the duplication of information that is becoming quite burdensome for those of us who are replying. Please read all the posts preceding yours and I think you'll find that all your questions will be answered.

i am told that i nees SEC assesment in 2 area paeds and mental health, would that entitle you to a restricted permit? I would mot be happy giving up my job here in the u.k if i would not be able to work in alberta while waiting to take the SEC and subsequently CRNE.
Please helpppppppppp
