There's a thread specifically devoted to that area. As for my husband, he works thru a travel agency. There are different kinds of "agencies", ones that will use you PRN (possibility of having to sign up with several of them in order to ensure hours). The travel agency hubby works for (as is the case with every travel agency I've ever heard of) is that you are guaranteed a set number of hours and rate of pay. Plus insurance starts on first day of assignment.

He got a few years of experience at our local rural hospital. Insurance sucked (waiting period of three months, then every few months or so deductibles went up, benefits got cut).

BTW, what are you talking about when you say signing up for 3 years? I've heard of assignments like 6,8,13 weeks or even six months, but to commit to an employer for 3 years? That would scare me off for sure. If they want you to commit for that long, I'd be wondering what their turnover rate is (and why). I can't even make a three year commitment to vacuum my apartment every few weeks.

I just went through an agency and relocated to California after I passed the NCLEX in July and I am SO happy with my job! I get top dollar and the hospital I'm working with in WONDERFUL! Do you know where in CA you are going to live?

The nursing agency I inquired to would want me and my sister to be committed to them for 3 yrs.We will be signing a contract with them and when we breach it we are going to pay for a certain amount.I know that's a long wait and a lot of money's involve since they will get their share from our salaries. It's really hard to decide, because i think most nurses here in the Philippines that don't have visas tend to go to an agency to process their papers. If I have a choice i would want to go through direct hiring then pay a good lawyer to process my papers, but i guess hospitals in the US right now don't do that anymore.
