Removing an IV Dressing without pain???

by RN CRNI
Updated Sep 17, 2007 at 03:39 PM by RN CRNI

Looking for what you do to remove an IV Tegaderm Dressing or IV that is taped up. (i.e. techniques, tips, or products you have used that make it the least painful for the patient!!

Also looking for any standard references that one might provide )

In particular: For the hairy individual
Elderly patient with paper thin skin

Thanks

rub over the tegaderm with al alchohol swab. It will come off easily.

I know this one, a 3m rep told me how You put your finger on the top of the dressing and pull it to the side it releases and doesn't even pull out hair.

We have adhesive remover available for that purpose. Also, alcohol remover pads can work, just keep away from open skin. stings a bit.

Always peel dressing in the same direction the hair lays on the arm while holding the skin taut. peel it off as a unit.

I've always just stretched the tegaderm/op-site and it loses its stickiness right off. But when someone has made a mish-mash by using tape over it...ugh...gently peel in the direction of the hair growth, but it still is a challenge.
