Flushing IVs with visible blood in the IV tubing

  1. IS it okay to flush an INT (the kind that have a few inches of tubing on them) that has visible blood in the tubing? What about if it has small visible clots or old blood in it?
The nurses I work with tell me it is okay, but I am scared to do this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I try to wthdraw the blood first, discard it and flush. If ifs really yukky, save the site and just change the extension set (5 inch heplock tubing with cap.)

Don't be frightened to put in a new IV. It is better to stick the pt again than to introduce bacteria into their blood. If the person may be a hard stick, get .3-.5 ml of 2% lidocaine w/o epi to dumb the area.
