FFP question

What is the max amt of time FFP can hang if it is being infused slowly to avoid fluid overload? Pt is already in CHF, MD wants it to run over 2 hrs. Wouldn't the cells begin to degenerate before that time? Any input would be appreciated. We decided that a 300ml FFP at 10 gtts/min would go in at 30 minutes-so we extended this to 1 hr. and got doc to compromise. Pt is receiving lasix too.

Default Re: FFP question
FFP has no cells--it's the noncellular component of blood,so no worry in that regard.
In nonemergent situations,FFP administration rate is 10ml/minute,so a 300-ml bag would go over a half hour. In an emergency, you can slam it in. In other cases,it is given as a continuous infusion,at say 50-150ml/hour. Very situationally dependent. Your blood bank should be able to provide you with more details and assistance, but a 300ml bag over an hour should be fine. You could also check with the MD about his/her preference for when the Furosemide is given--i.e. before, during or after the FFP.
