syphilis

by dekatn

We have a geriatric resident, that is currently in a behavorial health envirnment d/t adverse behaviors. Was contacted by behavoiral facility that resident will be returned to us later this week. Resident has been dx with syphillis, tertiary, so this explains some of her behaviors. My question is, are there any special infection control measures I need to put in place with this resident, other than UP, this resident is up and about in wheelchair, shares room with another resident. From what I have looked up, it is only transmitted sexually. I hate to sound so ignorant, but I've never had to deal with this particular situation before, just want to have all my ducks in a row when resident returns. TIA for any help you can give me.

Default Re: syphilis
Hi, yes syphillis is sexually transmitted. there isn't much of precaution besides UP . The only thing that worries me is that they can be quite disorientated, restless and make a lot of noise round the clock disturbing all other patients. Managing that can be quite draining on the nurses team. Most of the time when they get out of hand... we will suggest to the medical team to give some mirtazapine.. that works well
