Bringing pets to the hospital- Need policy help!

Updated Feb 01, 2009 at 04:17 PM by Elvish

Hello,
We are revising our policy. I would prefer our policy say that the owner must provide proof of immunization/license for the visit to occur. This is not for therapy pets, but personal pets coming into acute care.

One person doesn't think this is necessary and wants other hospital policies. We don't let patients in without ID for goodness sake! LOL. I believe this is a simple public health requirement we should request before we let people bring in animals. I am all for the visits, just want some proof they're relatively clean and safe.

I would love to hear your policies and would really love if you're able to email them to me!
THANKS SO MUCH!!
Tt

Our policy does not allow pets, period. The only ones we have are therapy pets and they are required to show proof of up to date immunizations. If we require those animals, then any animal should have the same requirements. I can't imagine what this naysayer is thinking.

You might want to talk to you risk manager about the potential liability involved in this. Also your county or state health department may have guidelines.
