I am due to start the LPN-BSN program at Indiana State University in the fall of 2012 and decided to start a thread for fellow students who may be starting around the same time so that we can connect and support each other.

I'm in Maryland ;)

Hi. I am planning to attend ISU in summer 2012. I know this is a bit down the road for me, but am wondering about clinicals/preceptorship. Do you have to attain clinical hours in a variety of healthcare settings (i.e. mental health, med surg, etc), or can you complete all of your clinical hours at one faciliity?

The ISU nursing program has two start dates - spring and fall. Once you apply and are tenatively accepted, they will send out the date you will start.

The clincials associated with the lecture are appropriate for the lecture. You will do mental health clinical along with the mental health dicactic portion. You will do the med surg clinicals along with the associated med surg lecturee classes. You will do the community health clinical along with the communith health lecture class.

As to whether you can complete all your clinicals in one facility--it depends. If you are in California, you are provided clinicals. You cannot arrange your own clinicals. The rest of the US, you pick your clinicals. They must conform to the requirements of the class. If your facility is large enough to have med surg as well as mental health and they take you on as a student, that is great. However, you must do your community health with a community health facilty--probably a local government community health program or clinic.

Thanks, LadyinScrubs for the input. I have already submitted all of my transcripts, applied, paid the admissions fee, etc. Just waiting to hear back with their decision. I do hope they allow me to use the old place I used to take the Excelsior exams or VCU. We'll see when the time comes. Also, I imagine they will look at the all of the EC nursing exams I took and say, "That's nice." Haha. I don't expect them to give me a gold medal for any of those. In a perfect world, I'd get some credit for them, but such is life.

Hi all,

I am looking into and planning to attend ISU in Fall of 2012. I need to take the TEAS test and 4 challenge exams. Should I take the TEAS test first or take (and pass) the 4 challenge exams first?

As to what is accepted by ISU and what is not--you must submit your transcripts for evaluation. That is the only way that you will know.

I called the other day and was told they do not evaluate transcripts? The only way to know is to apply. Is this correct? Thanks

I am applying for FALL 2012 admission as well. Graduated in December. Taking my Nclex next month. After that, I plan on taking the 4 challenge exams and science portion of the TEAS since I got like a 47% lol :(

I have a few questions hopefully someone can help me answer.

1)To apply for admission, is it competitive based? If I have all preqs done and all are above C, do I still need to worry I won't get in? What about after passing the 4 challenge exams, is it possible still to not get admitted? Do I need to look for back ups?

2)Did anyone have their transcripts evaluated before submitting your application for university admission? I called the other day and was told by the nursing dept that they do not evaluate transcripts. I will have to apply and they will tell me whether or not I'm in.

3)How many semesters into the program, will I be able to sit for my nclex-rn exam?

These are all the questions I can think of for right now. Thanks in advance for all you guys' help!!!

You are dealing with a university. Before anything can be done you must be in the system. That means you must apply to the university and get a student ID. Once that is done you exist and you can have your transcripts sent to ISU. The university evaluates your transcripts and will send you a DARS--a report of the classes you must take to graduate.

I don't believe it is competitive based but, quite honestly, I don't know because I never had to worry about comptetition for grades. I believe they are taking eveyrone but now that more people are considering the program, it may start being impacted and may be competitive based.

If you decide to take the challenge tests, they require a university student ID before you can pay for the classes.

3)How many semesters into the program, will I be able to sit for my nclex-rn exam? Go to the ISU website and look at the classes, the prerequisites, and the gen courses. That will give you an idea.

4)How long will it take me to get that bsn if I go in with about all the gen eds finished except for a few to meet that 124hr minimum for graduation? You will never have all your gen courses finished, unless you have a prior bachelors degree, because the university will require specific university-required GED courses to graduate.

Do you have to be a resident of Indiana for the LPN-RN online program?

Residents from many states can take the LPN-BS track of the baccalaureate program at ISU - see map of states that recognize or accept the program - http://www.indstate.edu/lpn-bs/images/icons/states-that-recognize-isu-lpn-bs.gif

Tootie88 Have you decided which hospitals you will use for your clinicals? I live in Va but I'm willing to go to Md if I have to. I will also be starting in the fall.
