ITT RN Program

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

Hello everyone! I was just curious to see if anyone has any information about ITT Tech? Any info would be appreciated :nuke:

I completely agree with you. I will be taking these comments to corporate so that they are aware of the issues. Student's experiences and opinions are very important to me and I would like a chance to address all of them.

Perhaps my opinion will help.

I am a fairly new student, going into my third quarter at ITT. There are ups and downs.

Ups

+Prerequisites are a part of the program.

+Classes are not M-F (though working full time while taking the nursing program is almost impossible.)

+The teachers are skilled in their profession and bring a lot to the classroom.

+VERY HARD WORK! I have seen several different “trade” schools spoon feed passing grades to their students. I have to work hard for my grades which are both rewarding and encouraging.

+There is no down time in class, meaning each minute of class is full of learning material, lecture, or lab.

DOWNS

-Cost.

-New program, the newer students get to smooth out the kinks in the program. Still, while some exams might be frustrating, the labs and lectures are full of information.

-There is a small amount of time to learn a lot of material. I would be willing to take on a few weeks/months to spend more time on certain subjects.

-No medical terminology class for the RN program. (I want this class!!!)

All in all, I’m not sorry I started going to ITT. It’s hard work and sometimes frustrating, but I’m sure most students anywhere feel this way. This program is meant for a student who is taking their education very seriously, there is no room for slackers. The accelerated rate is not for everyone, so think about whether you can dedicate 30 to 40 hours a week to homework. (No joke you will be spending a lot of time in the books.) The labs are all hands on and the classes are not huge and overwhelming so you can get one on one time with the instructors.

It’s too soon for me to recommend it fully, but I like what I see so far.

I am a graduate from ITT Technical Institute and I don't know what you all are talking about. ITT Tech is a wonderful school. I find it funny that people only post negative experiences. If you are a person that makes your decisions based off of what people post you probably should not be at school anyways especially in the field of Nursing. I don't care what school you attend there are always positives and negatives. Yeah a private school may be more expensive but I hear people complaining all the time about how many years and electives they have to take at Community colleges. ITT provides hands on training with less general education classes.

Chrissy, thanks for your sharing your experience. Now I am wondering, do you have a job? What part of Indiana do you live in? I know that in south bend, there is a school that has an lpn program that is not liked by employers in the area. I'm wondering how ITT Tech is valued in the community?

Just my two cents...

I've been hearing from a lot of people, including instructors at school and some family members, that the field of nursing is becoming a lot more competitive. Experienced nurses are getting the first pick of jobs, and there are less and less becoming available.

I wouldn't recommend the ITT RN program. I think that a lot of hospitals are becoming wary of the accelerated programs at ITT, Brown Mackie, etc. Plus, the costs are ridiculous. I understand the appeal of wanting to be able to start a program right away, but I really do not think that it's worth it. Even if they do secure national accreditation, you still may not be able to transfer your credits to a 4-year school. Many of them require regional accreditation.

And Chrissy, prospective students should absolutely read up all that they can on any program before committing themselves to it - especially one that's so expensive. The general education classes that are required at community colleges are required for a reason, in my opinion, they make you a much more well-rounded student.

I just went to an info session at Med Tech last night and I am taking the TEAS tomorrow morning. As far as not having to take general education courses for these accelerated programs, I know for both Med Tech and Harrison you do have to take them...they are just built in to the program. They are not PRE-req's like other schools. So for people going to these schools thinking you are getting out of English, Psych, and A&P that is not the case. The only benefit is that you do not have to take them prior to being accepted to the program.

Also as far as getting into the program you do have to take the TEAS and meet the minimum score requirements, so they do not accept just anyone...although to be honest the scores required are a little low in my opinion, especially for an accelerated program.

Also as far as transferring, Indiana Wesleyan does accept degrees from Med Tech, although I am not sure about ITT.

If you do chose to attend MedTech or a similar school just be aware that if you do decide to transfer to IW or anywhere else, you will have to re-take your English/Pscyh/etc for your BSN. A state-issued license is transferable, I think, but that doesn't mean that all your courses will be.

I'm really not trying to be negative, and I'm sure that success is possible no matter what school you choose to attend - I have just heard so many horror stories on here and elsewhere about for-profit nursing schools. Be sure to consider all of your options, and best of luck. :redbeathe

I know what you mean LafayetteErin...there are a lot of cons to going to schools like ITT, Harrison, and Med Tech. BUT when Ivy Tech first started out they had a lot of issues as well, as far as credits transferring and such. Even just recently they were in the news regarding the transferability (is that a word?? lol) of their credits.

For me I can't quit my job nor can I retake classes to raise my grade...besides the fact that the RN program at Ivy Tech has changed their requirements thus requiring me to take more classes. So Med Tech is the best option right now between everything being built into the program as well as the full time evening option my two year degree will actually take two years.

I do understand what you're saying. Good luck, and keep us posted on how it goes! Congrats on passing your TEAS, too - when do you start MedTech's program?

I am sooooooo confused, I am supposed to start Itt Tech in Indiana (Merriville) Sept 14th,2010. I have read so many bad things and some ok things about the school I am getting scared. However, I have talked to so many nurses and DON's and they told me I will be fine with an ASN from ITT. They said when you go for a job all they want is your license so I decided to go to Itt. I know they are seeking NLNAC accredidation but have to wait til the 1st class takes boards. Man I am really confused.

Hi Lisha...I am not going to ITT however I understand what you are going through. I am planning on going to Med Tech which is another for profit school here in Indiana. I keep second guessing my decision as well and I am just hoping and praying they will get the NLNAC accreditation.

I know some hospitals down here will not hire if you graduated from a school without it.

I was a little concerned myself about ITT Tech's RN program. I was accepted in the program and start Sept 2010. I think that everything will be fine. It is a new program and all new programs have to go through the same steps. If we allowed other peoples opinions to influence us we will get nowhere in life. For 6 yrs I tryed getting in Ivy Tech's nursing program. I had all A's in the prereqs and couldn't pass the TEA's math. I failed it by 2 points and scored low 90's in the other areas. I prayed for something to give. Few months later I found out about ITT Tech. I said another prayer about the school because I was a little worried about the reviews. God is good and I am gonna follow the signs he gave me. I am excited to start at Itt Tech and will keep you all posted. Good Luck to all nomatter where you decide to go to school at.
