Grrr. Ivy Tech: SO confused!

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

 I'm so confused! I have a few basic questions that I'm hoping someone can answer for me. I've looked through the other threads and can't find anything. I can't find anything on their site either!

- What classes are prerequisites for applying to the program?

- I'm REALLY confused as to how quickly the program can be completed. I'm looking at IUPUI's second bachelor degree program that is 18-20 months. It's twice as many credits, but I wasn't sure if Ivy Tech's schedules work out where you can complete it in a certain time frame.

- Anybody know whether students who already have bachelors degrees (not in nursing) are competitive?

- What seems to be the average prereq gpa in whatever classes are the prereqs?

- (a big one for me)Does Ivy Tech offer health insurance for their students?

- I'm interested in Indianapolis. Is admission only in the fall?

Thanks so much!

Well, I don't have all the answers for you but I can tell you what pre reqs are needed.

ANP 101 & 102

ENG 111

PSY 101

I'd say most applying for the RN have all A's. Although I have heard there are some that got in with a B or 2.

Points are figured by adding points from pre reqs

A=30

b=20

c=10

Then they add in your TEAS score, the test that Ivy Tech requires.

You can also earn 3 points for applying in region.

I just got accepted to an RN program in Logansport.

I had 4 A's and an 87 on my TEAS and 3 pts for region

giving me 210 pts.

Sometime before completing your nursing core, there are co reqs that also need to be done.

It would take at least 2 semesters to do the pre reqs. Then depending on what semester you finish, you may have to wait out a semester. T

Then it is usaually 3 or 4 semesters for a full time program fo finish the nursing core.

Most campuses have fall and spring acceptance. I'm assuming you are wanting to know about ASN, so the deadline for them is April 1st for Fall acceptance and September 1st for Spring acceptance.

I heard some campuses when you begin in the spring with nursing will go through summer and fall and then spring again.

But most that begin in the fall take summers off.

I don't know anything about Insurance, since my husband works for the state and we have decent insurance already, other than they have a link on the campus connect website. I have never checked it out only noticed it.

I don't know much abot IUPUI, my cousin is going through the ABSN, after getting his masters in social work. He should just about be finished. He got in pretty easily it seems.

Good luck! hopefully someone else can give you the other answers.

- What classes are prerequisites for applying to the program? The PP got them, so whatever "brushup" courses you need to take (like MAT 050) and PSY 101, ANP 101 & 102, your IVY elective, and ENG 111. Then you have CO reqs, which most people like to get done before they start nursing school, so you can just focus on that one program. The co reqs are:

MAT 117 or 118 (111 and 112 are being phased out)

PSY 201 or 205 or SOC 111 or 164 (you choose one)

COM 101 or 102

ENG 112 or 211

ANP 201 or BIO 211 or CHM 101 or Phys 101 (you choose 2 there)

In order to APPLY to nursing school you must have completed pre reqs. You must complete co reqs before you graduate.

- I'm REALLY confused as to how quickly the program can be completed. I'm looking at IUPUI's second bachelor degree program that is 18-20 months. It's twice as many credits, but I wasn't sure if Ivy Tech's schedules work out where you can complete it in a certain time frame.

The ASN program is 4 semesters long, and I believe the LPN program is 2 or 3 semesters long. The ASN program has a total of 69-71 credits. Those semesters are in addition to the time for pre requisites (and co requisites).

- What seems to be the average prereq gpa in whatever classes are the prereqs?

They don't use GPA. As the PP also stated they apply points based on the grades you get in those classes.

- (a big one for me)Does Ivy Tech offer health insurance for their students?

I would like to know this too! I would have to go down to part time when I start nursing school and I cannot afford Cobra.

- I'm interested in Indianapolis. Is admission only in the fall?

Are you talking about the school in general or only the nursing program? You can apply to Ivy Tech whenever, and start in whichever semester you choose. My first semester is this semester for the summer. As for the nursing programs, I know for the ASN program there is a spring and fall program only at least for Indy.

Thanks so much!

Yes, insurance is available. You can get the brochure for insurance at the Security office at the Lawrence campus or at the Office or Student Affairs at the main campus on Meridian. I don't know the rates.

The entire program is 69-71 credits, right? Not just the nursing classes...

Yikes... I found the info and it's honestly pretty crappy insurance for $1000 a year.

Yeah, your pre reqs, co reqs and the nursing program in total are 69-71 credits.

And WOW thats super expensive insurance...that would cost me 200 a month for my son and myself. I pay half that through work...ugh.

Student insurance is rarely a good idea-the protection it supplies is limited and the cost is often as much as a legitimate policy. It is usually for sucker parents who are paying for some peace of mind.

I used to sell insurance, BTW.

I would suggest you look at other other options besides Ivy Tech. Perhaps ones that will allow you to go to school in the evenings or on the weekends. Ivy Tech is not a flexible program. A lot of students just don't get that.

I do "just get that" actually. I've looked into their schedule and days are the best schedule for me. I cannot do evenings. For others that aren't in my place, where would you recommend? I am not familiar with any night or weekend RN programs in central Indiana even if that were something i could do.

As an aside... I see you live in Avon. I live right down the road in Danville.

I didn't mean to be so harsh in my tone-I meant to say that Ivy Tech, just like every school trying to woo prospective students, makes promises or dangles possibilities that never come to fruition once you have actually committed. Don't expect the faculty to have any sympathy for your situation.

Have you checked some of the for-profit schools around; medcheck, Indiana Weslyan, ect. The cost may be prohibitive, but they tend to me flexible.

Nah, online tones are hard to tell. Sadly I am extremely bound by cost. :( I have an undergrad degree already and have near maxed out my undergrad loans. I basically need to get through this will as little money as possible...
