sheesh, why is this indiana board all about ivy tech?

where are all the active nurses?

i would like to hear about monroe hospital vs. bloomington hospital

anyone?

You may have noticed that to try to allow Indiana nursing issues to be a bit more visable there is now a sub section in the Indy forums for nursing programs.

Most People Go To Ivy Tech B/c It Is Cheaper And A Lot Quicker. Plus They Have A 99% Pass Rate On The Nclex. Yeah It Is Hard To Get Into, But It Is A Good Program.

I worked at Monroe for a year in the ER. I did my clinicals at school at BH, and I work at BHOC in Paoli.

Monroe was a fine place to work. The pay was very good, 133% of what I was making at BHOC for the same job. I worked both places while in school. The ER department is good, I took my wife there when I worked there. They diagnosed a heart murmur (unrelated to why she was there) which turned out to be Pulmonary HTN. The ICU dept I think is up to snuff, I know some of the nurses that worked there too. The Med/Surg floor, when I worked there, wasn't all that great, but that has been 2 years ago.

Since BH runs the ambulance service, Monroe gets like "0" ambulance patients. Or they get the frequent fliers that BHER doesn't want to deal with for the 99th time.

Bumping this, because I have the same question. Any more opinions out there on where to work as an RN living in Bloomington?

Hmmmm? I'm not on here enough to know much about the whole Ivy Tech thing, but what I do know about is Bloomington Hospital... I was employed there until just recently and my emotions and experiences are very mixed... I had the pleasure of working with several wonderful people there and giving our patients the best care possible, but I also had the burden of working with many people who were unqualified, incompetent, or simply lazy... In my opinion management at BH is a big group of bobble heads, nodding all the time that they are "listening" to your worries, and shaking back and forth as soon as you walk out the door... everything is about the facade, as long as we look good the public will think we are good... so lets go spend tons of money on things we don't really need and cut out all the perks for our workers... I mean for gods sakes, we got a Kroger coupon for 12$ at thanksgiving ( to help with the cost of your holiday meal, may not be used to purchase alcohol, tabacco, or lottery tickets... ) and a free meal from the cafeteria for christmas... geee! thanks boss! Glad to see you gave yourself a big raise though, can i get a lift to work in your new corvette???

I can't say much about Monroe, most of the information I ever got was probably tainted through my affiliation with BH... I have heard from many patients that it's a great place to seak treatment.

I'm at UH in Indy now, and I'm not as naive as I was long ago, but I can tell I'm already much more appreciated here. I have plenty of room to grow, wonderful benefits, fair pay, and the mortgage on my brand new 4 BR house is only 40$ more than my 1 BR apartment was in B-town ( thanks IU for jacking the cost of living into the heavens! ) So, my advice? If you can, get out of Bloomington!!!!! There's a world of opportunity out there ( and employers still willing to pay a moving bonus... ) If for some reason you're stuck there, look at all your options, take your time, ask potential employers questions, sell yourself, make them beg to hire you!!! and if you happen to end up at BH, do me a favor, do your very best to make a difference, it's what I tried to do every day... if you really want to you can make a change, it may only reach a short way ( in my case the OR I worked in... ) but it will be your little patch of respite, and it will give you what you need to care for those in need...

As someone who worked hard in 4 years of nursing school for a BSN degree, I can definately see the frustration that the rest of you are feeling. When looking at boards like this that are flogged by "Ivy Tech" posts, it really makes me want to find a "block" button for these posts... they do not pertain to me! Besides this, nursing jobs for new grads are very hard to come by these days, and most times when I talked to nurse recruiters, their first question was "Do you have your BSN?" This makes me wonder where all the AN nurses are getting jobs at....

ANYWAYS... I am from the Indianapolis area but applied to Bloomington hospital because I needed a job wherever I could get it and Bloomington had a ton of openings. I did not end up taking the job but I can say they were going to pay me more than the job offer in the hospital that I have been an SN 2 at for 2+ years, and seemed to be very open to having new nurses on their units. I'm not quite sure if this is the information you wanted, but hey, at least they offered a new grad a job!!:up:

I'm getting this vibe that you're a little biased towards nurses with their ASN, i apologize if i'm wrong. To answer your question about 10 months later, I'm a new grad (Dec. '10) and I have my ASN with no prior nursing experience of any sort and I got a job with one of the IU Health hospitals downtown. Yes, BSN are probably becoming to be the preference, but when it comes down to hiring someone, they're gonna hire the person who they get the right feel for, ASN or BSN. I'm working on my BSN right now, I just wanted to get a job sooner.

Monroe Hospital vs. Bloomington Hospital.. hmm..

Well, I have been employed by BH for a year. I personally thoroughly enjoy my job and love working with the people that I do. A previous poster mentioned their experiences as mixed. They worked with lazy, shady, unqualified people, etc etc. Well, I do too. But I can take a guess that anyone reading this and who has had a job has had a similar experience. Not everyone has the same work ethic. You will always work with people that are lazy, who you feel may not be as qualified, etc. Currently, I feel that the management staff is doing a fairly decent job. As a comparison.. well, I have no experience with Monroe Hospital. None whatsoever. Frankly, I have heard the opposite of MH. Pts come to BH, complaining about their treatment at MH. Its all in the eyes of the beholder I suppose..

As far as the post about ASN vs BSN, they make the same pay. Honestly, the only real difference is that the person with the BSN took a lot more general ed courses (ie history, speech, psychology, etc.). Nursing requirements were most likely the same, and they both ended up passing the same NCLEX test.

When I am done with my nursing degree, I will have an ASN. I also happen to already have a BS in a completely unrelated field. Does this make me any less qualified because I don't hold the BSN? Nope. Do I think I won't get a job because of this? Nope. I bet the ASN people getting hired are the ones that the companies feel are qualified enough.
