DePaul's MENP questions

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Okay so I had some questions that I was hoping actual graduates of this program could help me with in regards to admission, since the answers Im tending to get from representatives at the school could be more on the sunny side of the road. Anyways, I have a BS from MSU in Human Biology and have for the past 3 years working as a laboratory technician (research not clinical) for a local University. I recently took my GRE and obviously my cognitive writing skills have suffered since leaving school because, I got a 3.5 on the essay portion. The MENP site says that they want you to have a 4 and I was wondering if there are any real life examples on here of people gaining entry with a 3.5. I know DePaul can be more accepting of that other places and I was just wondering how true that actually is. I know they must have higher than normal application numbers given the economy...

Still crossing my fingers though

Thanks!

congrats to all those accepted! I have recently applied for the Jan 2011 cohort and am eagerly awating news :) I have fully completed the application but was curious to why they don't ask for recommendations? I am a pharm tech and work for a physician as well, and thought good recs from them would be helpful! Did any of you send them anyway? I understand the program is competitive and want to be as competitive as possible.

My understanding is that DePaul doesn't ask for recommendations because your undergrad GPA and the reputation of your undergraduate institution largely speak for themselves.

As for 'competitive', see the thread I just replied to you in. This isn't med school.

SQUIRE! Thank you so much for your replies :) I really appreciate your input! Just a little antsy!!!

I was just looking around on DePaul's website and noticed that they have added that you need "two letters of reference". I found it interesting since it was a recent topic of conversation.

I applied to the DePaul MENP cohort to begin this fall, 2010. I know some people have been rejected and I believe that many have been accepted. I've heard nothing!!! When I called, I was told that my application is still being reviewed. Does anybody know what is going on? We were told by email that they would let us know weeks ago. I'd appreciate any information....Thanks!:)

Same here, actually. I've been calling graduate admissions and I keep getting the same response- that my application is still being reviewed. Whenever I call the department of nursing, I just get redirected to graduate admissions. It is kind of frustrating, because I hear orientation is in May and I still haven't received my decision letter yet. :uhoh3: In fact, I didn't receive my campus connect information until a few weeks ago.

However, I did send in my application pretty late, so I brought that onto myself. D'oh! *slaps self*

I have am starting at DePaul this September and was wondering if any of you have insight on how to schedule my classes? It is advised to space out your labs on two different days, or it is nice to only have to go to campus 3 days a week?

Short answer: Yes.

Longer and possibly more helpful answer: It really depends on what your priorities are. A lot gets crammed into the first quarter at DePaul (and at any nursing school, as far as I can tell), so to prevent information overload I intentionally spread out my classes. That said, a fair number of students commute from some of the more distant suburbs, so minimizing the number of days spent on campus is a boon to that student population. Whichever is more important to you is something you have to figure out.

Hey everyone

I am also starting this fall at Depaul and am super excited! I was looking at the book list and was wondering if we needed all the books listed. If any students already in the program can help me I would appreciate it cause my budget is pretty tight and if just one book is not necessary I would rather not buy it.

2. Clinical Nursing Skills and techniques

3. Health Promotion Strategies Thru a LifeSpan

Nursing 332

301's changed a bit since I took it, but you will need at least the first two books for that class (though you'll use the Nursing Dx Handbook more in later quarters).

For 332, you'll use Mosby's Guide heavily. The student workbook you won't use for that class (unless you want to do even more studying) but it is required for NSG 460, which is Advanced Assessment. The handbook's nice, but is more of a useful reference that doesn't weigh as much as the full textbook than something actually required. I don't know about the online access bit.

For 322, the instructor's notes were more useful for me than the textbook. However, the textbook was useful for those times when studying that you look over the notes and just go "....what?" If you get a decent, useful study group together, you really only need one copy of that textbook for the group.

Thank you The Squire. Your post was very helpful :)

So earlier I asked for some feedback about the program, but I completely forgot to check back. Essentially, I've heard that the program is extremely disorganized. Clinical Instructors are often not hired until the last minute. Policies and requirements change last minute etc. Professors are short with students and not supportive. Can anyone in the program address these issues? What are the strength and weaknesses of the program as you have experienced them?

Thanks.
