Can't get a job in chicago

It is getting real frustrating being in Chicago. I moved out here recently from Frisco,Tx. I have applied to all the major hospitals but nobody seems to be calling me back. The only interview i've had is with a small community hospital and for what they are offering money wise it is laughable considering the standards of living in Chicago. Could anyone PLEASE advise me on what to do next, I am getting to my wits end here.

Hey, I know we are having the same issues....it has not been fun looking for a RN job here. If I find out anything helpful I will be sure to let you know.

On another note, I used to live in Texas as well...Plano area. When did you move here? What brought you here?

My being out here was more of "living somewhere new"aside from Texas. And for some reason I thought finding a job in a bigger city will be more easier...

I work in a Teaching Hospital on the Northside.

They are hiring right now--we are hoping to open a couple of new units.

Right now, they would prefer experience for those floors.

However, we also have a WONDERFUL orientation for new grads---the Versant Program---orientation lasts about 16 weeks & more if needed.

Consider central IL - near Peoria, Bloomington all hire new grads and our cost of living is much better...

Don't just expect to be called back. You have to be proactive and even a little pushy with HR to get results I've found. A lot of the hospitals have hiring freezes on right now from what I've been hearing, but there are still jobs out there. Agencies are still hiring all over the place, I know.

Several nurses that I know that are working agency aren't getting calls right now they are experienced. I like the suggestion of looking downstate the cost of living may be lower and they competition may be less due to less people maybe.. If my husband lost his job up here I would probably sell my house and consider moving downstate

I became a LPN Dec 2008, and I am still working where I was while a CMA for the past 4 years. When I do look in newspapers or on the internet for job postings I see so many for RN's. I am so confused as to why it would be hard to get a nursing job when there is a shortage.

Trick is to stay consistent bug HR remember those in HR have jobs so what do they care if you dont or get the managers name of the unit u want to work and call that person , alot of times HR does not forward the applications to the unit to make them aware there are people who are interested. Try this course im sure youd have much better luck at getting a response sooner, or better yet go the the hospital u want to work at and see if u can get a hold of the manager yourself. A lot of the chicago hospitals HR departments dont let you call and "bug" them about your application. I have tried calling and they tell me that because of so many applicants they cant check on the status of your application. Any ideas on that?

It's crazy. I want to start my career and it's been so difficult. Anyone know of hospitals/units that are hiring and willing to take a new grad? Thanks for all of the great input and hopefully things will happen soon!

I am getting frusted too..nurse graduate you are not alone its been like two months cant find a job..i am looking in the south surbarbs and chicago too.
