    Hello and greetings from North Carolina Please allow me to introduce myself. I am a junior nursing student at North Carolina Central University, a certified nurse assistant working in Medical/Surgical/Coronary intensive care unit, and a mother of two boys age 7 and 4. I am looking for a summer nurse extern program in the Chicago area where I plan to relocate after I graduate in May 2007. I desire to be a Neonatal intensive care nurse so I would like to do my extern in a Level III NICU.

    This is where you guys come in. I need to know the names of the hospitals in the Chicago area so that I can contact the Nurse Recruiter at those hospitals. I believe (you can correct me if I'm wrong) that a summer extern would allow me to (1) really know how life goes in the unit from the people who live and breath it (2) "get a feel" for the Chicago area and allow me to research schools and extra curricular activities for my boys and myself and (3) find out if being in Chicago is compatible with my career goals and family objectives.

    I would appreciate all the information you have and any encouragement you may have for my current journey. Thank you in advance for everything.

    P.S. I was stationed in Great Lakes when I was in the military and I spent the majority of my off time in the Chicago area back in 1992-1993

    Are you planning for this summer or next summer? If for this summer, you are going to be hard pressed into finding an opening. Most of these places have their internships filled by April at the latest for the summer.

    I'm doing Northwestern's program now- it ends on Friday- and a LOT of folks in my extern "class" are in L&D in some way shape and form....I'd start looking on N'Western's web site in March... www.northwestern.edu ...and get more info from them then.

    I am planning for next summer (2006). I should have put that in my original thread.
