getting malware on allnurses.com

  1. 2
for the past week when i've landed on this site via google searching nursing topics, my browser got hijacked and some kind of downloader program attempted to install on my computer. It only happens on this site, nowhere else.

    anyone else have this problem?

I've noticed the similar problems on my iPhone when accessing the site directly (not through the app). My browser will automatically close allnurses and open a spam website. I haven't been viewing the site on my desktop computer and after hearing that this problem is occurring to more than just me, I'm tempted to take a break from the site. I'll submit this through the help desk.

No, and while this is possible, it is very unlikely. The only way that this site could cause those issues is via a fake "plugin required!" box, which it doesn't have as everyone would be seeing it, possibly via Flash content which I haven't seen any of (except maybe embedded YouTube videos, which wouldn't cause the problem), or what is known as a "Java drive-by", which is when a malicious user embeds malicious code in a Java applet, then puts it on a page so the page asks the user if it is okay for the Java code to be ran. If the user accepts, the malicious code is executed on their machine. However, I have never seen a Java applet on this site, and even so, it would have to be a server administrator (not even a forum admin) who would place this malware on the page, which I don't see happening.

Not denying your problem, because these 'browser hijacks' exist, but if you have one, it usually won't matter what site you navigate to; your browser will be redirected to whatever the spam site is. I think it is strange that it is happening on your iPhone though, as I've never heard of anything like that for iPhone.

Yes, I've had this problem as well. It happened twice today using Google Chrome. The AN homepage loaded and then redirected to a file download page. I immediately closed the page and ran multiple virus scans but didn't find anything. I got on AN on a different computer and after browsing a few pages it redirected to the same website.

For what it's worth, I'm using Google Chrome on Windows 8 with avast! as my anti-virus, and have not experienced any problems.

I view many websites on my iPhone, and this has only happened while viewing allnurses. In fact, it just occurred when I opened the site a few minutes ago.

I just put this through the help desk.

I have had the same problem twice in last few days only when loading this website. Avast blocked the connection. The last blocked connection was from Fast File Downloader when I clicked my bookmark for this website. Since I am not the only one that it is happening to on this website, it has to be on the website's end and not ours.

I am using Windows 8 with Firefox and Avast antivirus
