Who's Doing Palliative Care?

  1. Hello and Happy New Year to allnurses hospice folks!

I'm looking for information about what hospices out there have an up and running pallative care program. I would like to have a look at what's working in terms of how the PC program fits in with the hospice side of the organization, what the protocols are, how the PC service is staffed, what forms are used, how reimbursement is handled, etc. So to start my search, anyone know of an active PC service out there? Feel free to PM if you like.

    Thanks in advance,

    Katillac

We have a PC program. It is run by our Medical Director and he has a secretary, nurse and NP that work with him. While it is part of our agency, it is run seperately and not under the hospice license. We use them as consultants and they bill accordingly. Most of their patients are not on hospice yet, but they admit to hospice when the patient is ready. They are very involved in the local hospitals and the local Doc's refer their patients to them frequently. This has worked out well for us and helps us to get patients into hospice care sooner - good for the patients and good for us. They bill just as any other physician would bill their patients. I'm not involved in that side of the business so I don't know a bunch about it. I hope this is helpful.

Yes, it's very helpful. Thank you! If you would feel comfortable sharing your location with me, please PM me. I'd like to visit at some point.

And please forgive the megatext! I wrote it in Word and pasted it over. I'm going to try to fix it.

    Thanks again,

I am helping to design a pediatric palliative program within our large urban hosp. the hospital joined forces w/ our local hospice program for kids. (the adult program is already up and running). This is a great continum of care for the kids w/ life threatening illness. We have a nurse coord who works for the hosp (grant funded for now) and she works closely w/ the hospice program.

hi, I'm new, I live in Australia and am really pleased to see more places getting paediatric palliative/hospice care. Where I live there are no such facilities but in other cities in Australia there are and I wish there were more around. My son isn't palliative yet but we do live with the knowledge that he is not going to improve, he is only 16 (Quad CP) but is deteriorating & I find it very difficult to get advice from professionals about skin care and mouth toileting etc.

I would actually be interested in a description of the identifying factors of what is considered palliative care. His Paediatrician says he isn't palliative yet...........
