Hospice Salary Requirement?

Had an interview Friday and they asked me what my salary requirement was. I had no idea what Hospice nurses make. Is it salary, per hour, or per visit? I am a New Grad RN but I have worked as an LPN for various years in long-term care and with Hospice patients in that setting. They also requested a bilingual RN because they are losing clients to other Hospice agencies because they don't have one and I am one. So they expect me to go out and teach about their Hospice services to this community and even help translate their pamphlets.

So what should I have told her? How much did they start you at?

I recently took a position as an RN/ Patient Care Coordinator. I went into the job with 9 years previous hospice experience and my salary is 60K/year. Again this is a salary position and most weeks you work over 40 hours in very stressful situations. I am also anxious if this is comparable to other agencies. Good luck in your journey!

Well, I looked it up on-line and found out that in my area it pays about $58,000 - 59,000 a year which turns out to be about $30/hr if 40 hrs/wk. However, I have not been offered the job yet but I believe I will (knock on wood). I also only have long-term care experience so it probably won't be as much. I'm supposed to call her on Monday. Will see what happens. I will post then if and when I get an offer. Thanks for the info though!

Depends on what state and metro area you work in. I, too am curious about how hospice nursing pays compared to hospital floor nursing.

My experience is that your rate of pay is dependent upon the state/region, years of experience as a nurse, years of hospice experience, and status of the employer; for-profit vs. not-for-profit.

I got the job offer. Not much per hour. Comes out to about $42,000 per year on just the regular per hour salary. However, they do pay reimbursement per mile, on-call daily pay, plus additional reimbursement per visit/admission/or death. Adding it all up, it will probably be closer to $50,000/year. Which may not seem much but the cost of living here is less.

Dollar Re: Hospice Salary Requirement?
I live in Southern Cal and I am an RN Case Manager earning approx 78K/ yr on 40 hour work week (8a-5p M-F), no on-call requirements and no weekends. In Cali I believe the average is 60-65K per year based on my research. We use on call RN's and LVNs on weekends and evenings. After regular hours we have a telephone nursing service to triage calls. There are opportunities for OT as well doing admissions on weekends. We are paid milage at the federal rate (more than enough $ for gas and some left over for saving...even with the gas prices in Cali) get an hour for lunch and if you volunteer to be on call for a holiday we get paid for the holiday, on-call hours plus paid for the calls you take. I was hired after 1 year acute care exp. and no hospice exp. It can get stressful at times but the work is very fulfilling and I enjoy it most of the time. I use to have to work an extra shift a week every week on a 12 hour shift on the Floor to make the same money, now I have autonomy, make my own schedule and don't have to be up @ dawn to get to work on time for shift change and deal with the politics on the floor.

No, we are not hospital based, I'm not sure what the hospital based hospices pay compared to the floor RN's. None of the hospitals in my area have hospice services.
