Hospice and SNF

SO bear with me please- I am still relatively new to hospice- but we have had three patients pass away in a SNF that were on our services however the SNF does not call us for several hours after that patient has died. Of course by that time the patient has been taken to the funeral home, the family notified and MD updated all without notifying us. The facility DON said that there is no regulation (either federal or state) that mandates hospice attend a death and that they are not out of compliance by not notifying us in a timely fashion. Now of where hospice is supposed to be in charge of the medical and professional management of the patient's care I disagree. Any insight to help me understand this better? Has anyone else had these issues also? I appreciate any input.

Default Re: Hospice and SNF
The SNF does have to enter into a contract with your hospice per Federal Conditions of Participation (CoPs). The regulation is specific as to certain items the contract must contain, refer to reg: 418.12 c (2) iv.

C.)Standard: Written Agreement
2.) A provision that the SNF/NF or ICF/MR immediately notifies the hospice if -
iv.) A patient dies

Hope this helps, I would encourage you to review your written contract with the facility.

Good Luck !
