Re: Bariatrics in hospice
Several years ago, when I was fairly new to hospice, I had an obese woman patient who spent most of her time up in a recliner chair. As she got weaker and it was getting harder for her to stand, I started to worry we wouldn't be able to care for her unless she moved to a hospital bed. I talked her into it, and the bed came and we put her in it. Once she was bedbound my mistake was obvious... she was too fat to be comfortable in the bed, and there really wasn't room to turn her to give care. We wound up moving her to IPU where she died.
Next time I encounter that I'll try to get a bariatric bed at home, or see if pt can go to IPU where we can have the right equipment.
