My great uncle is suffering from alzheimers and the family is trying to figure out how much per hour to pay a nurse to take care of him. If any of you have even a ball park guess it would be greatly appreciated!

Does he need nursing care (medication management, wound care) or just someone to be with him and supervise? Depending on his assets and needs, he may qualify for PASSPORT services in Ohio. PASSPORT can provide up to 20 hours a week homemaker, home health, and chore services, depending on his meeting the level of care. Contact your local Area on Aging (for you in Mansfield, that would be http://www.agingnorthcentralohio.org. Ph 419-524-4144).

For many families, 20 hours in not enough, and many hire either a private individual or an agency that provides companionship, med reminders, homemaking etc. like Home Instead or Comfort Keepers. I believe the going rate for an agency is $15-18 an hour. When I worked with private clients a few years ago, I charged $10/hr. You may be able to get someone to do sleepover shifts, where they get up to assist him at night if needed. A woman I know who did this charged $40-60 a night for 10 hours. If you do choose to hire an individual, I highly recommend paying the $20 at a local police department to make sure they have a criminal background check.

Good Luck!

try having them contact the Area Agency on Aging, there are funds available for alzheimers respite care.
