New Grad Interested in Home Health

  1. Hello,

I am graduating in 2 months and will be looking for employment in MN. My desire is to go into Home Health and eventually Home Hospice. I was wondering if there are any opportunities for new grads out there in home health or am I better off doing med-surg for a year or so? I know med-surg would be great experience but I was wondering if any of the Home Health agencies ever offer training for new grads. Thanks for any help you can give me!

I really think a new nurse needs at least one year of acute care to develop skills and your sense of "radar". That skill when you walk in and say this person is throwing a PE, this person is septic, this person is having a heart attack, things like that. Now some people say you do not need to do that but I believe you do. In home health your out there alone/always back up on the phone but it is not the same.

I agree that you need med-surg experience first. You need practice with skills such as Foley cath insertion and venipuncture. Good luck!
