I have been working on a step down unit for about 6 months and I would like to move to home health after a year. I was wondering what are some experiences with the different agencies. Could I start prn after the first of the year and work my way into a job while still working at the hospital?

Most people who start out in hh keep their hospital jobs and just pick up a shift here and a shift there in hh. That is for extended care or shift work. If you want to do intermittent visits, they usually want more of a commitment from you and it is more difficult to fit this in around a hospital job. Just decide what shifts, days you will be available and give this info to the agency. You can work one or more regular shifts a week, just be on call for a certain shift, or however you want to fit it to your regular schedule. Hope you like hh.

There is a huge learning curve with home health care and most places are not going to be interested in training a PRN person who will only be able to work one or two days per week if they don't already have experience in home health care. A better bet would be private duty nursing where you would do block shifts in someone's home as Caliotter describes. Private duty shift work can be much less stressful but with some of the same skills that you use in the hospital, with vents and trachs and tubes. However, once the tasks are completed, you may find that you have a lot of time on your hands and the shift drags on.

I appreciate the feedback. If I decide to work full time for a company who would you all recommend. In general I hear some good stories, but then I hear some horror stories. Any info would be great.
