Nursing specialities most receptive to CAM & holistic nursing?

Specialties Holistic

I was wondering if any of you thought certain nursing specialties would be more receptive to Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) and holistic nursing practices?

I know there is a lot of interest in Integrative Oncology in my area, and that many Oncology patients explore CAM therapies to augment their treatments.

Personally, I think holistic nursing belongs in ALL the specialties....

Thoughts?

Maybe nutrition? I am also interested in this. I found a website that has a Nurse Nutritional Consultant program, it is 6 classes, certified by the AHNA. Let me know what you find out :) http://www.gifam.org/courseNNC.htm

Well, I just became a student member of AHNA and their most recent publication has a breakdown of the "% of AHNA members x practice/functional setting."

Top Ten:

1. Nurse Educators (17%)

2. Med/Surg (16%)

3. Hospice (15.4 %)

4. Palliative (12.9%)

5. Home Health (11.9 %)

6. Critical Care/ICU (11.8 %)

7. Mental Health (11.8 %)

8. Behavioral health (11.7 %)

9. Geriatric (10.9%)

10. Nurse Practitioner (10.7 %)

These numbers don't really indicate how RECEPTIVE these areas are to holistic nursing, but it shows where a lot of AHNA members are currently practicing.

I wonder where you'd apply the Nurse Nutritional Consulting since it overlaps w/ the hospital RD's...I'd be interested in that.

The reality is that holistic nursing belongs EVERYWHERE....

I read on another thread that some hospital admins throw out any apps

with the term Holistic.

I want to have my own holistic nutrition practice. I worked for a doc who

trained at http://www.unsinc.com. They use whole food nutritional supplements

and diet changes to let the body heal itself so symptoms go away.

I am all for meds but this is preventive. I saw so many amazing recoveries.

85% of clients were word of mouth so I think that speaks for itself.

Plus they teach you how to run your business so it makes I easy.

I also want to look into colon hydrotherapy, and maybe for regular

income do hospice care or school nurse. Have you heard of healing

touch? I don't like to get too new agey but I have had tried all these

personally and have experienced improvement. Good luck !

I think it really depends where you are. I just spoke with an oncology RN here in California who is looking at job openings in New Mexico. She said of a majority of the oncology RN postings down there said, "Holistic Certification preferred" which I think reflects the desires of that community. I met her at an AHNA meeting, and she said she only got interested in joining after see researched the job postings in the New Mexico area...

Holistic nursing is an asset in Cali too, but there are definitely places that aren't as open to this. I would probably try to find out, and adjust my resume accordingly. A nice thing about being networked with local AHNA RN's is they can give me a good idea of which hospitals/managers are "holistic friendly." :D

I have to admit, after thinking about this for a moment, that if someone was going to throw out my resume because it mentioned the word "holistic," especially since holistic nursing IS a recognized specialty, I probably wouldn't want to work there anyway!!! :twocents:

Yep. I hear you!

I think there is are big new agey communities in the New Mex/Arizona areas. It is probably pretty there!

Roses623, I just sent you a private message...:D

Specializes in L&D, QI, Public Health.

I would think Labor and Delivery would be an area where CAM is used.

Specializes in STICU, CVICU, Flight.

We use music therapy in our heart program to decrease anxiety pre/post op. Specifically, instrumentals with 60 beats per minute, to mimic a "calm" heart rate.

Specializes in Geriatric/Sub Acute, Home Care.

I agree and I wish I knew for this is an intense subject I would love to investigate. I have found throughout my nursing career that AN HOLISTIC approach was never really stressed, although some facilities are seeing the positive results of simple practical techiniques just recently. DUH!!!! The Healthcare Industry just makes me want to vomit most times, sorry for the graphic verbal connotation but I think we think too much about nonsense,, have too much paperwork, have management that doesnt give a flying rats hiney and dont deal with sick injured people the way we really should. Sorry....had to vent.....anyway...its..just my opinion.
