Protocol driven practice highlights the principle failure of holistic theory: that the physical well being of our pts takes precedence over the psychosocial aspects of our care.

It's simple prioritizing: a non-breathing pt doesn't adapt well to the whole spectrum of care - unless of course, you either a) get them breathing again, or b) are technically proficient enough to intervene in ways that prevent them from assuming room temperature in the first place. Of course, that is not always possible - people die, but being the well-trained allied health professional that can be in a position to alter negative physical outcomes should be our FIRST goal. Why? Because our physical bodies are our conduits to the metaphysical world while we're here.

You can't address the one without addressing the other first.

Protocol (or evidence based) practice COULD be compatibile to the concept of holistic theory - but not in the way such holistic theory has been currently defined.

And in the end, evidence based practice is not only here to stay, but it will eventually redefine concepts like holistic theory. And that eventual redefinition will come about precisely to make concepts like holistic theory compatible w/ protocol driven practices. . .

In the meantime, protocol driven or evidence based practice is a threat to concepts like holistic theory. Why? Because protocol driven practice requires proof of efficacy.

But on the bright side, as our understanding of nursing undergoes the revolution of being held to standards that require proof, nursing might just come kicking and screaming into a professional, 21st century world.

That all being said, I wouldn't recommend you use my viewpoint in an essay - it might not be well received. For your essay, the obvious answer is YES, they are compatible. Why? The 2 rules of college: #1 The instructor is always right, and #2 If you want to pass, see rule #1.

And if you really want to stir them up, explain that there is no "proof of efficacy" and that even double-blind studies are basically null and void!

thankyou! i am diggin your college rules. I can but only agree, sadly it had taken me three years into my hons degree to work that out.the question has got my class in a bit of a stir.many arguments have unfolded, yet no one is much the wiser.
