Re: Alone in my "hippie" beliefs in Texas at Nursing School.
I am in the DFW area and am also from N. CA. I just graduated with my BSN. I was really worried about nursing school because after a birth center birth and a home birth I became a doula and finally decided on nursing school to become a midwife. I was afraid that I would be biting my tongue bloody the whole time! I am really lucky in that my program was exceptionally open-minded and my OB nursing course was taught using the midwifery model of care. Now, I am a L&D nurse at county and although the births that our patients have there would not be the type of birth that I personally would choose for myself, I know that many of our patients are high risk and do need the additional care that the hospital provides. I still have to bite my tongue bloody occassionally, and keeping my eye on my personal and professional goals has been key. You can do it and know that you are not alone! We may be few and far between here, but trust me- there are plenty of liberal hippie types in Texas.
